LONDON (June 14, 2012): Gary Barlow has today won the Premier Inn Celebrity Dad of the Year award for the first time.
Pipping reigning champion Peter Andre to the coveted trophy, this year saw a hotly contested, but good-natured tussle, to be recognised as the nation’s greatest celebrity dad. Winner Gary famously challenged two-time consecutive winner Peter Andre to “stand aside” in an exchange on Twitter earlier this year.
The award comes hot on the heels of an extraordinary summer for the Take That singer, who has successfully pulled off The Diamond Jubilee Concert with great acclaim, celebrated his co-written Diamond Jubilee single ‘Sing’ jump straight to number one in the charts, and most recently been honoured with an OBE.
Gary accepted the publicly voted award this morning.
The 41 year old dad of Daniel, Emily, Daisy and soon-to-be new baby girl says: “I’m absolutely chuffed to have won. It’s a real honour to have been nominated in the first place but to have actually won is amazing. Out of everything going on in my life, there’s no doubt that being a great dad to my kids is the most important and fulfilling role. I am very lucky to be in the fortunate position I am and there’s plenty of dad’s out there who go the extra mile to ensure they are the best father they can be. This year, alongside the award I’ve gratefully received, Premier Inn is also looking to crown a Real Dad of the Year which will give the many sons and daughters out there the chance to nominate their dad for an award.”
With thousands of votes cast, the top spot was the most hotly contested to date. Gary fought off competition from this year’s nominees which included new father superstar rapper Jay-z and first time nominees, Cristiano Ronaldo, Vernon Kay, ex-N Dubz rapper Dappy and Prime Minister David Cameron.
Claire Haigh, spokesperson for Premier Inn says, “We’re delighted that Gary has been announced as the winner of the Premier Inn Celebrity Dad of the Year 2012. It only seems fitting that his obvious dedication to his family, hard-working nature and newly acquired status as a national treasure should be recognised by the British public. Congratulations to him!”
The official Premier Inn Celebrity Dad of the Year award aims to reward the celebrity dad who has impressed the nation by balancing a hectic public life with the demands of parenting.
This year also sees the first Premier Inn Real Dad of the Year award being launched, where the public can vote for their dad to win a coveted prize just like Gary’s. Nominations can be made at facebook.com/premierinn from 17th June 2012.
