Brits are taking to planes, trains, automobiles and even ferries as the great summer getaway gets into full swing!
Our latest research on the topic shows that over three quarters of us are planning a summer holiday. Where to, you say? The UK itself is a top destination of choice – pipped to the number-one spot only by Spain, according to YouGov.
With millions of miles to be racked up by land, sea and air in search of that oh-so-perfect retreat, we can now reveal the nation’s sleep habits on the move…
It might come as a surprise, but over a third of Brits (37.75%) struggle to fall asleep when travelling by any mode, with 12.4% saying it’s actually impossible.
Coaches, trains and cars are the most difficult modes of transport for people to fall asleep on, while over a third of us (34.5%) can’t sleep at all on a plane.
Plane annoying – lack of sleep impacts summer getaways

Being well-rested ahead of a trip shouldn’t be underestimated either. 28.43% of people say that a lack of sleep means they arrive groggy and tired. 22.84% say they are irritable and moody, while 14.21% admit that it puts a dampener on the rest of their trip.
An uncomfortable seat, noise and a lack of a pillow are listed as culprits for disrupting sleep when travelling.
Getting a good night’s sleep beforehand, bringing a pillow and knowing there’s a comfy bed on arrival are all called out as important factors to help with sleep anxiety. For the best possible chance of a restful night’s sleep, over one in ten (11.36%) make the smart move of booking a hotel near their airport or departure point.
When it comes to travel buddies, children are by far the worst travel companions for people hoping to get some shut-eye. One in five parents say that travelling with kids keeps them awake. 15.53% of people struggle to sleep near strangers – a clear problem for those on public transport. While partners and friends are also on the naughty list for keeping us up.
A Premier Inn spokesperson said:
“The great summer getaway is upon us but many of us will arrive groggy and tired due to lack of sleep which then goes on to impact the trip. For longer journeys investing in a travel pillow, using noise cancelling headphones and ensuring clothing is comfortable to ensure you’re neither too hot nor cold, can help aid sleep on the move. Where possible, staying in a hotel then night before a flight can help ease anxiety about a trip and making sure you’ve booked accommodation with a comfortable bed for the duration is always key”.
