Jim’s Premier Inn Adventures

Jim from Plymouth achieved a long-term ambition to walk 630 miles of the South West Coast Path between Minehead and Poole, completing 470 of them either side of the lockdowns in 2020.

So, when the UK restrictions were lifted over the first and second UK lockdown, it was the ideal time to do a ‘pandemic friendly’ activity and walking ticked all the boxes.

Jim says:
“Walking is a brilliant COVID-safe activity, as long as you always consider your safety and that of others.”

Throughout 2020, keeping safe was his main priority and says he couldn’t have completed his quest without the reliability, safety and comfort of Premier Inn hotels* – the only place he stayed at across the South West. His path covered off a variety of places with stays in our hotels across Helston, Seaton, Bideford, Camborne, Penzance, Newquay (Fraddon), Bude, Weymouth and Bournemouth.

Jim explained that as someone who was cautious and a little anxious about travelling during the pandemic, it was incredibly important to him he always felt safe. With friendly team members, clean and well-equipped rooms and beds that could always guarantee him a great night’s sleep, Jim said he always felt reassured by the standard of cleanliness in the rooms and the security measures the hotels carried out. Having the Premier Inn CleanProtect cleaning promise in place gave him and our teams that extra later of safety and reassurance they needed too.

What’s more, Jim’s father used to work at Whitbread so he was very happy to see a traditional British brand doing what they do so well during these unprecedented times.

“I believe that my adventures on the coast path, using Premier Inn hotels as my base, is a great example of how your guests can enjoy the fantastic beauty of the coastline in the South West (or, indeed, any other area of the UK) by affordable, comfortable and safe means. As we sadly can’t attend gigs, sports events etc. at the moment, we can still get out in the great outdoors whilst staying in accommodation which is safe.”

For Jim, while he was happy that he was able to do the whole path, he believes walking just a mile or two can do wonders for people’s wellbeing – and that there’s a path for everyone and all abilities. He says of the South West Coast Path:

“It’s not all savagely hilly. There are some very flat parts, like Dawlish - the section that runs by Chesil Beach west of Weymouth - or the Barnstaple to Bideford section in North Devon, which mainly follows the Tarka Trail cycle path. There really is a path for everyone.”

So, what’s next for Jim? When the time is right, Jim is not only planning to complete the South West Coast Path walk in reverse, he also wants to walk the Welsh coastal path. And we can’t wait to welcome him at our hotels along the way!
