The world’s smoothest cities to visit

It’s not long until the clocks spring forward once again. The good news is that it’ll make the days feel longer and lighter, but the bad news is that we all lose an hour of sleep. However, according to our latest research around rest and bedtime routines, it’s an hour that the already sleep-deprived UK can’t really afford to lose.

Summer’s just around the corner, which means we can all start getting excited about everything from UK staycations and weekends away with the kids to big summer breaks and exciting trips abroad. But let’s face it, summer breaks aren’t always smooth sailing – complications like poor Wi-Fi, bad weather or flight delays can quickly turn those long-awaited summer plans upside down.

To help you find the most hassle-free trips, we conducted a little research to reveal which cities around the world are most likely to keep you stress free this summer. We analysed various factors, including airport delays, internet speed, national holidays, congestion and weather to create what we like to call a 'Smooth City' score. The cities were then ranked from highest to lowest to discover which locations are most likely to provide the smoothest trips with the least disruption.

Our study revealed that Las Vegas in the USA is the world’s smoothest city for travellers, scoring 95/100 overall. “Sin City” performed well across several metrics, taking third place in the reliable weather list and sixth in the internet connectivity rankings. The stable desert weather conditions meant that packing for a Las Vegas trip should be a breeze, while low levels of congestion make it less likely that you’ll get stuck in traffic or miss a flight.

San Diego follows closely behind in second place with a score of 94.8. Data from TomTom’s annual traffic index places the city 56th among major U.S. cities, meaning that you can expect fewer traffic jams. Like Las Vegas, San Diego also performs well for weather, ranking in sixth for this metric thanks to the city’s consistent year-round climate.

Orlando in Florida ranks in third, with a score of 93.8 and a perfect congestion score. While the city isn’t congestion free and there may be the odd unpredictable jams, traffic frequency and severity are significantly lower than in the other cities in our index.

North American cities make up over half of the top 10, with Oslo in Norway taking fourth place, then Leeds and Liverpool placing in fifth and sixth for the UK.

Wellington in New Zealand sits in twelfth place overall, the highest-ranking city for Oceania despite being the most geographically isolated, while Rio de Janeiro places in 17th position for South America.

Europe’s smoothest cities to visit

Europe is famous as a hub for city breaks, thanks to the short travel time between cities and easy transport options. However, with many across the UK and Europe trying to capitalise on this, disruptions like flight delays can have a huge impact on trips.

The good news though is that for some cities, short breaks can still be smooth sailing. According to our research, Oslo is among the top five cities in the world for smooth travel, and Geneva, Stockholm, Riga, Copenhagen and Zurich also place in the top 15.

Aside from these cities, which also feature on the global list, Vilnius in Lithuania places in seventh overall for Europe (71.5 out of 100), with Krakow, Helsinki and Florence completing the top 10 for the continent.

But what makes these cities so dependable for short breaks?

Airport reliability is one of the main areas where European cities rank so highly on the global stage. Many of the cities in Europe’s top 10 also rank in the top 10 globally when it comes to fewer airport delays. With flight disruption playing such a crucial role in the success of a city break, these destinations are the smoothest options thanks to their low number of flight delays.

The Nordic and Baltic countries in particular make for ideal city break destinations thanks to their overall scores. They rank higher than larger European cities such as Rome, Paris and Barcelona, which are all naturally more likely to see disruptions due to their greater populations and more complex infrastructures.

North America’s smoothest cities to visit

Las Vegas, San Diego and Orlando sit as the top three in the overall rankings, so it’s no surprise to see them as the top three smoothest cities for travellers in North America too!

With an incredibly smooth score of 95/100, Las Vegas takes the top spot, with its predictable climate the deciding factor in placing it as the most straightforward city to visit in North America.  Recording only 21 days with extraordinary weather over the last 12 months, Las Vegas has the most predictable weather of any city in the country, where the consistent desert climate makes it easy for travellers working out what to pack for their holidays.

New York ranks as the fourth smoothest city to visit in North America with a score of 79.8 out of 100 and is also the city with the best airport performance on the continent. Seattle, which places sixth in the North American ranking, follows closely behind on this metric, though it slips down the list as a result of its changeable weather conditions thanks to its location in the Pacific Northwest.

Ottawa, Los Angeles and San Francisco round off the rankings for North America, though each face their own challenges across airport performance, traffic and connectivity.

South America’s smoothest cities to visit

Travelling to South American cities can be more challenging, but vibrant cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Bogotá reward those who do visit with rich culture, delicious food and incredible landscapes and architecture.

Rio de Janeiro is ranked as the smoothest city to visit in South America, ranking in 17th position globally with a score of 71.9 out of 100. With above-average airport reliability and relatively consistent weather in comparison to other locations, it’s actually Rio’s fast internet speeds that separate it from the crowd, scoring higher than any other city on this metric! However, as with other South American cities, increased congestion pull down the overall scores for cities in the area.

Lima follows in second, topping the global rankings for stable weather conditions. Although it’s known as one of the driest capital cities on the planet, that doesn’t always mean blue skies, as it’s also known for being overcast and damp, thanks to the garúa fog which occurs from June to October, and high humidity year-round.

Argentina’s Buenos Aires completes the region’s top three, followed by Santiago, São Paulo and Bogotá. So, if you’re planning on visiting South America, allow some extra time for delays in your itinerary to get the most out of these thriving metropolises.

Asia’s smoothest cities to visit

Osaka in Japan leads the rankings of Asian cities with solid airport reliability, while its weather and congestion scores land in the middle of the pack. Despite Japan being known for its technology, the city actually ranks below many European and North American cities for internet speed.

Cities in Japan also lose points in our ranking based on the number of national holidays, with 18 days likely to cause disruption to travel on short breaks in 2026, in comparison to just eight in the UK and 11 in the U.S. As a result, travellers could find themselves navigating busier holiday periods, or finding many businesses and services closed during their stay.

Despite ranking only 56th overall, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia takes second place for Asia with a score of 39.7 out of 100. With Malaysia’s capital boasting a tropical climate, it’s weather that pulls the city down the overall rankings, with 67 extreme weather days logged in the last 12 months – more than any other Asian city. However, it fairs relatively well for airport delays compared to other cities in the region, falling behind only Osaka and Bangkok, while it also performs well for traffic congestion. Bangkok in Thailand ranks third for the continent, while Singapore and Istanbul complete the top five.

Oceania’s smoothest cities to visit

When it comes to Oceania, the Kiwi cities of Wellington and Auckland lead the way by some margin ahead of Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Wellington also places just outside the top 10 of the global rankings, in 12th place, with its airport reliability score second only to Florence in Italy. Despite serving fewer routes than other major airports, the efficiency of this airport is among the best in the world, so it should hopefully provide visitors with a smooth arrival and departure. With a reasonable holiday calendar and moderate congestion, the city sits in the middle across the board, though it loses points thanks to its variable weather and internet speeds.

Auckland follows in second for Oceania with a score of 61.9, while Brisbane completes the top three in Oceania with a score of 40.3. Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney fall to the bottom of the table for Oceania due to their airport delays - Melbourne scores the lowest of any city in our index, and Sydney and Adelaide also rank in the bottom globally.

With longer queuing times and delays, it’s a good idea to allow more time if you’re visiting Oceania. If you’re travelling from the UK, you could even book an airport hotel to make the process as smooth as possible.

Africa’s smoothest cities to visit

Africa may not always be associated with being an easy continent to visit, which is reflected in two cities from the continent ranking in the bottom 10, but they aren’t the lowest ranking locations overall – Bogotá, Melbourne and Adelaide take the bottom three positions.

Cape Town leads for the region with a score of 61.4 out of 100 – the city scores well for airport reliability, traffic management and weather predictability, with Johannesburg and Cairo falling further behind with scores of 22.8 and 18.2 respectively.

Make sure you check local guidance and allow for extra time for the smoothest trip to South Africa, home to stunning landscapes, iconic landmarks like Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, and top attractions like the V&A Waterfront.

Methodology

To identify the world's most consistent and dependable cities for travellers, Premier Inn analysed data for 87 major cities from around the world against six key metrics that impact travel reliability and day-to-day consistency.

• Airport arrival + delays - FlightRadar24

• National holidays - Time & Date

• Traffic congestion - TomTom Traffic Index

• Weather - Open Meteo

• Mobile internet speeds - Speedtest

For weather, seasonal averages for temperature/wind/rainfall were calculated for each location. The standard deviation was then calculated, enabling us to count the number of days with 'extreme' weather over the course of 12 months. 'Mild' conditions were excluded.

The datapoints were then assigned scores using a weighted index scoring system, with the scores collated and re-indexed to create a final score out of 100.

Countries where travel is not currently advised by major governments were excluded from the analysis.
