Tourism on the rise as fans flock to Downton Abbey filming location. With the return of award winning show, Downton Abbey to living rooms across the nation this autumn, the show is predicted to take the entertainment world by storm yet again. According to new statistics from the best value hotel chain Premier Inn; it seems the period drama is having an impact on the travel industry too.

The show that premiered its third season last Sunday is inspiring holiday goers to visit destinations such as Highclere Castle in a bid to see where their favourite scenes are filmed including Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley’s first kiss. According to booking figures from the hotel chain, the Premier Inn Newbury/Thatcham site, just a short horse and carriage ride away from the grand Grantham residence, has seen a 82% increase in bookings since the shows return.

The recently refurbished Premier Inn Oxford has seen a 66% increase in bookings, as the nation channel their inner Lord and Lady Grantham at the charming Oxfordshire village that boasts the shows locations such as Downton Hospital, the village pub, the home of Matthew Crawley and the local church.

Claire Haigh, spokeswoman for Premier Inn, said: “Downton fever has certainly taken over the nation’s living rooms. It is great that such shows showcase what the country has to offer, these sites are some of the UK’s national treasures and it is wonderful that this truly British drama has encouraged people to visit them.”
