If you have some spare time or feel curious about the surrounding area, there are plenty of things to see and do just outside of York city centre. In fact, some of York’s most family-friendly activities are situated a short drive away. 

Yorkshire Museum of Farming

Popular with families, the Yorkshire Museum of Farming brings farming throughout the ages and seasons to life. There’s an exhibition dedicated to the Women’s Land Army, you can see animals being fed, groomed and shod, learn about livestock and much more.

York Air Museum

The Yorkshire Air Museum

What was once RAF Elvington is now home to the Yorkshire Air Museum and a memorial to  the allied air forces. Learn about the history of aviation, discover what life was like at a typical wartime bomber station and see original aircraft from WW2 and the Cold War.


Helmsley Castle

Helmsley is a picturesque market town on the North York Moors. It’s a great place to let the kids run free, and the town itself has plenty of shops, tea rooms and pubs. Helmsley Castle is just under an hour’s drive from York but there’s lots of lovely scenery along the way. If you like medieval ruins, check out nearby Byland Abbey and Riveaulx Abbey. 

Castle Howard

A magnificent estate and stately home, Castle Howard is about fifteen miles outside of York. It hosts year-round exhibitions events (including The Proms) and has a garden centre, farm shop, gift shop, adventure playground plus all those grounds to be explored. It’s no exaggeration to say there is something for everyone at Castle Howard.
