What's on

Edinburgh is known for some pretty special events, and each event alone is a reason to come to town. Here we give the lowdown on what’s happening through the year – from the hotly anticipated rugby, footy and golf to the festivals celebrating film, art and jazz to the world-famous Hogmanay, Fringe and Military Tattoo.

Events and festivals

From April until December, the ‘Festival City’ throngs with art, music, literature, science, dance, theatre, comedy, colour and creativity from around the world. But with so much stuff going on, it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve summarised the main events to help you with your planning.

Hogmanay

Who needs one night of celebrating the New Year when you can have three? A traditional Scottish celebratory extravaganza, party people can expect three days of music, street parties, world-class fireworks displays and historical events that have been taking place for decades.

The Fringe

Every August, Edinburgh comes alive with art, music, theatre, comedy, cabaret, dance and pipes – along with a palpable hum and buzz – as thousands of performers descend on the city for the famous Edinburgh Fringe. It's an opportunity to see acts and enjoy a friendly carnival atmosphere, in the world’s biggest arts festival.

Sport

When it comes to sport, Edinburgh has some prestigious associations: it’s home to the national rugby union team and a top flight football club. Plus, it’s expansive green spaces have helped establish the city as a top golfing destination.
