Love international food? You can take a trip around the globe in Newcastle’s eateries. From pan-Asian restaurant Sohe in Jesmond and Turkish grill Lezzet in Benton, to Mascalzone and Café Vivo offering plenty of Italian options in the city centre, you’re spoilt for choice.

Or make like the locals and find a pub. Newcastle has plenty of good, old-fashioned boozers which serve hearty food. Try The Broad Chare in the city centre for traditional pies and Sunday roasts or The Bridge Tavern - a brewpub and eatery serving artisan ales and locally sourced seasonal British comfort food with a twist.

Head under the Tyne Bridge to find Quay Ingredient serving coffee, teas and tasty treats. Or go to Quilliam Brothers, located next to Newcastle University. This quirky tea shop offers over 60 loose-leaf tea varieties and has a small cinema and art gallery in the same building.

And, whether you’re a culture vulture or not, it’s well worth a visit to Newcastle’s art galleries to sample some of their excellent coffee shops. Six, the BALTIC's stunning rooftop restaurant, has sustainably sourced local food and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. At the Biscuit Factory, you’ll find the Factory Kitchen café serving hearty home cooked food, while Artisan offers great British inspired menus using the finest regional and seasonal ingredients.

If you love a good bargain, try to catch one of the city’s popular food markets to ensure you get to sample some of the best local produce around.

On the first Friday of every month from 9.30am to 2.30pm, Grey’s Monument plays host to the outdoor Newcastle Farmers’ Market. Here, local producers show off their wares, from unique local cheeses to handmade chilli sauces. The rule is that all products must be raised, grown or produced within a 50-mile radius of the site of the market, so you’re guaranteed to find some truly local delicacies.

Tynemouth Market is held each weekend, but while it’s mostly arts and crafts, every third Saturday of the month, local farmers turn up to sell fresh, local produce. From fruit and veg to cheese and artisan sausage rolls, you’ll find everything’s tasty - and available at market prices.

The only permanent indoor food market in Newcastle, Grainger Market is open every day of the week from 9am to 5pm. The Grade I-listed building is hugely popular, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local meat and fish.
