Open the Gift of Sleep this Christmas with our top tips

It’s been a year like no other, and with Christmas 2020 just around the corner, we decided to ask around 3000 people living in the UK, (including over 1000 primary school age children), what they’d like to find under the tree this year.

From the results, we discovered that almost a fifth of adults (19%) wanted a good night’s sleep for Christmas, while a quarter (26%) were just wishing for some peace and quiet. Considering how challenging 2020 has been for all of us, it’s no surprise that top of the list for 40% of those asked was simply to spend as much time with family as possible.

Unsurprisingly, kids had a very different idea about sleep being a top priority over Christmas, with over a fifth saying that staying up late was one of their favourite parts of the festive season. The excitement of knowing that Santa Claus would be visiting their house (59%) ranked even higher as a favourite part, and of course, playing with their presents on Christmas Day came top of the list with 77% of the poll.

Despite 83% of those we asked agreeing on the importance of sleep this festive season, sadly 21% also said that December is the month that they get the least sleep – Christmas Eve was named as the most sleepless night for both adults and kids alike.

It’s no surprise that over two thirds of primary school children say they find it harder to sleep at Christmas than any other time of the year, with almost 9 in 10 awarding Christmas Day as the date they most look forward to in the year. Of those kids, 80% say it’s the excitement of Santa visiting that’s keeping them awake, with 52% unable to stop thinking about toys. For adults, the survey showed it was thinking about getting the Christmas shopping finished (22%) and preparing for the day itself (24%) that was keeping them awake.

With adults wishing for a great night’s sleep this Christmas – and children looking forward to a later bedtime – we teamed up with Sleep Expert Natalie Pennicotte-Collier to give you the Gift of Sleep this Christmas with the help of her handy top tips.
