One of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe, York Minster was built in the thirteenth century, although additions were made throughout the next centuries. Surviving collapsed towers, reformation looting and civil war sieges, the cathedral was fully restored in the 20th century.
Explore 2,000 years of history in the interactive museum or take a guided tour. Head up the central tower to enjoy the great views of York or join a service. A visit to this iconic building won’t disappoint.

Getting there

Located in the heart of York, you’ll have no problem finding this city centre landmark. If you’re heading to York Minster from Leeds Bradford International Airport, you can get into the city centre within 2 hours by car or train.

Travelling by car in the city centre


Although the cathedral doesn’t have its own parking, you’ll find plenty of pay and display car parks just a short walk away.

Getting around by bus


With lots of city centre bus stops nearby, you can easily hop on a bus to York Minster any time of day.

York Railway Station


The station is just across the river from York Minster and is a 10-minute stroll through the city or a 5-minute taxi ride to the cathedral.

Top tip

If you don’t want to tackle city centre parking, there are also six park and ride sites around the city. Simply head to one of the free, secure car parks and finish your journey by bus. Check out the park and ride sites on the Travel York website for more information.
