Spring forward (and fall back into bed) with the Premier Lie-Inn!

It’s not long until the clocks spring forward once again. The good news is that it’ll make the days feel longer and lighter, but the bad news is that we all lose an hour of sleep. However, according to our latest research around rest and bedtime routines, it’s an hour that the already sleep-deprived UK can’t really afford to lose.

Our research shows that on average, people across the UK are getting just 6 hours and 27 minutes of shut-eye a night – not the necessary 7 hours and 44 minutes – which means we as a nation are running on a nightly deficit of around 77 minutes before the clock change even begins. This builds up to a staggering 468 hours, equivalent to 20 full days, lost over the course of a year – no wonder we’re all feeling so tired! Plus, for 25-34-year-olds, it doesn’t just feel like a seasonal adjustment - 49% admit the spring shift throws their routines completely off.

So this year, we've decided it’s time to give our guests their hour back. On Sunday 29th March, we’ll be having our first ever ‘Premier Lie-Inn', extending checkout times in our hotels across the nation from 12pm to 1pm and letting everyone stay in bed a little longer.

And by the looks of our survey results, we could all do with the extra shut-eye! One in three people say a proper lie-in makes them genuinely happy, while 49% say their mood is noticeably better after extra sleep. Lie-ins are rare – one in eight admitted it’s been over a year since their last one, while a shocking 14% of over-65s say they’ve never experienced one. Our study revealed that even the length of the lie in depends on the region. Liverpool comes up trumps once again, sleeping in until 09:22 on average, while Cambridge residents wake up at around 08:43.

The nation’s typical lie in ends at around 8:58am, although the UK’s relationship with rest differs between regions too. Liverpool takes the crown as the UK’s lie in capital, with a third of adults managing a lie in on a weekly basis – the highest in the nation – followed closely by Cardiff (need stat), Leeds (31%), and Bristol (30%). At the opposite end of the spectrum, Brighton and Hove appears to be the nation’s most sleep deprived area, with a quarter of adults admitting they haven’t had a lie in for over a year.

This year, our stance is simple: if it’s a lie in that the nation wants, then it’s a lie in that the nation gets! With the launch of our new ‘You know what you’re getting’ campaign, we’re doubling down on what our guests value most – comfort, consistency and a great night’s sleep.
