FAQs
Hertfordshire is packed with lively towns! Some of the biggest and most well-known include:
Watford – The largest town, great for shopping, nightlife and home to Warner Bros. Studios.
St Albans – Rich in Roman history, with a stunning cathedral and bustling market.
Hemel Hempstead – Known for its riverside walks and family-friendly attractions.
Stevenage – England’s first New Town, with green spaces and a great arts scene.
Hatfield – Famous for Hatfield House and links to Queen Elizabeth I.
Hertford – The county town, full of historic buildings and riverside pubs.
Welwyn Garden City – A town with leafy streets and parks.
Bishop’s Stortford and Hitchin also stand out for their mix of heritage and modern living.
Hertfordshire is best known for its mix of countryside and culture, just north of London. It’s home to Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where the Harry Potter films were made, and Hatfield House, a former royal residence. The county has deep Roman roots, especially in St Albans, once known as Verulamium. It’s also famous for pioneering Garden Cities like Letchworth and Welwyn, and for being a hub of British film and TV production, with Elstree Studios hosting shows like EastEnders and The Crown.
The county town is Hertford but the largest town by population is Watford. Watford is a major commercial centre with excellent transport links, shopping and entertainment, while Hertford is more historic and picturesque, with a quieter vibe and lots of heritage buildings.
Hertfordshire is one of the smaller counties in England by area, but it’s densely populated. The landscape includes rolling hills, rivers and the countryside, making it ideal for walking, cycling and outdoor adventures.
