FAQs
Stevenage is best known as the UK’s first post-war New Town, officially designated in 1946 to help ease housing shortages after World War II. It was designed with modern town planning ideas, focusing on spacious residential areas, green spaces and separate zones for shopping, this makes Stevenage quite unique compared to older towns. Besides that, it’s also famous for being the hometown of Lewis Hamilton, one of the world’s top Formula One drivers. The town is also recognised for its network of cycle paths and pedestrian-friendly design, which makes getting around easy.
The oldest building in Stevenage is St Nicholas’ Church, located in the Old Town. This church dates back to the 12th century, with parts of it built around 1150. It’s a great example of medieval architecture and still hosts services and community events today. The Old Town around it features historic cottages and streets, giving a glimpse into Stevenage’s past before the New Town was developed.
Definitely! Stevenage offers a great mix of history, nature and modern amenities, making it a worthwhile stop if you’re in the area. Whether you enjoy outdoor activities, shopping or exploring small towns, Stevenage caters to all. Fairlands Valley Park is a big draw for outdoor lovers, offering walking trails, lakes for kayaking and picnic spots. The Old Town is perfect for history buffs and those who enjoy independent shops and cosy cafes. Plus, the town’s proximity to London and other attractions makes it a convenient base for day trips.
What sets Stevenage apart is its unique place in British planning history as the first New Town built after WWII. It was designed to offer a better quality of life with plenty of parks and a focus on safety through dedicated pedestrian and cycling routes separate from traffic. Another special feature is the contrast between the New Town’s modern shopping and leisure facilities and the history of the Old Town, which feels like a little village within the town. Also, its location offers quick access to both countryside and cities like London and Cambridge.
Stevenage is medium-sized, it’s bigger than a village or small town but not as large as a city. It offers a good range of amenities including parks, shopping centres and leisure facilities. The town is spread out, with distinct areas like the modern New Town centre and the older Old Town.
No, Stevenage doesn’t have a cathedral. The main historic religious building is St Nicholas’ Church in the Old Town, which dates back several centuries and is well worth a visit for its architecture and peaceful setting. If you want to see a cathedral, the nearest one is St Albans Cathedral, located about 20 minutes away by car or train. St Albans is famous for its stunning medieval architecture and makes a great day trip from Stevenage.
Yes, Stevenage Old Town is one of the town’s highlights. It offers a great contrast to the modern New Town with its narrow streets, historic buildings and independent shops. You’ll find plenty of cafes, traditional pubs and small boutiques that give it a village-like atmosphere. The Old Town often hosts community events and markets, making it a lovely spot to soak up the history while enjoying a relaxed stroll.
Stevenage’s town centre is mostly focused around the New Town development and includes The Forum shopping centre, which houses a mix of high-street shops and cafes. Close by is the Stevenage Leisure Park, where you’ll find a cinema, bowling alley and restaurants. The town centre has been developed with convenience in mind, offering plenty of parking and easy pedestrian access. While it’s modern, the town centre contrasts nicely with the quaint Old Town, giving visitors two very different experiences within a few minutes’ walk.
Although Stevenage isn’t near the coast, lots of seaside towns are within easy reach for a day trip. Popular options include Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea, both about a 90-minute drive or a bit longer by public transport. Brighton is also reachable in around two hours and offers a bustling beach scene with lots of shops, cafes and a famous pier. These spots are great for enjoying traditional British seaside fun with beaches, arcades and fresh seafood.
There’s plenty to keep you busy in Stevenage! Outdoor lovers will enjoy Fairlands Valley Park, which has walking and cycling paths, lakes for kayaking and fishing and picnic areas. The Old Town provides a historic backdrop with shops and pubs, while the New Town centre offers modern shopping and entertainment options, including a cinema and bowling at the Leisure Park. Families can visit the nearby Knebworth House and Gardens, famous for its outdoor concerts and beautiful grounds. Plus, Stevenage’s location makes it easy to explore the nearby countryside or take day trips to London, Cambridge, or the Chiltern Hills.
