"Surprising decline in dining standards at Premier Inn"
A recent stay at the South Mimms Premier Inn was notable by the clear decline in dining standards. While the accommodation was of the usual standard, clean and decent sized room, the restaurant was very poor. It was clearly understaffed - we were asked to go away and return 15 later despite the fact only part of the room was being used and there were clearly vacant tables available. Several items were not available - king prawns and chicken tikka skewers from the starter menu. Pretty basic items. Similarly there were apparently no bananas or strawberries, meaning two of the "new additions" to the dessert menu were unavailable. Again, pretty basic catering items that we could probably have found in the Service Area adjacent to the hotel.
It gives the impression that Whitbread are not only closing some of their restaurant chains linked to Premier Inns, but are also bearing down on the quality of the dining experience in their Thyme restaurants. We have heard from other family members that they have similar negative experiences of dining at Premier Inns recently. If this is the case then the time may have come to find an alternative hotel chain when travelling around the country. The availability of reasonable dining options adjacent to the hotel has been a significant factor when choosing a hotel when visiting new locations.
