FAQs
Ware is best known for its historic connection to the malting industry, which shaped the town for centuries and made it an important brewing hub. It’s also famous for its unique gazebos – little summerhouses built in the 18th century at the back of riverside gardens, which are the largest surviving group of gazebos in Britain. Another claim to fame is that Ware was once home to one of the biggest coaching inns on the Great North Road, a reminder of its importance on the old London-to-Cambridge route. Today, visitors come for its riverside walks, historic priory and lively town centre.
Yes, Ware is a market town in East Hertfordshire. It has a long history, stretching back to Roman times and grew into an important town thanks to the River Lea and its location on major coaching routes. Nowadays, it combines its historic roots with a modern feel, making it a lovely spot for a weekend visit or a short break.
Ware isn’t huge, but it’s one of the larger towns in East Hertfordshire. It has a bustling high street, a good mix of shops and restaurants and plenty of green spaces, while still keeping the feel of a smaller, easy-to-explore town.
Ware sits in a great spot with lots of interesting places close by. Just down the road is Hertford, the county town, with a castle and riverside walks. Bishop’s Stortford and Harlow are also nearby, and for those looking for city buzz, London is only about 40 minutes away by train. Nature lovers can head to the Lee Valley Regional Park, while families might enjoy Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne or Hatfield House with its gardens and history.
