Manchester is a thriving cultural hub, that’s bursting at the seams with history, art, a buzzing nightlife great for music lovers (for many people, clubbing as we know it today was practically invented at the Hacienda in the 90s) and plenty more. Home to two of the world’s leading football clubs, Manchester is also famous for the wealth of exciting musicians that have hailed from the city – most notably, Oasis, The Stone Roses, New Order, Take That and The Smiths. The city is also home to the world’s first passenger railway line and England’s first artificial canal.

A person from Manchester is referred to as a ‘Mancunian’ (pronounced ‘man-kew-neeyun’), which derives from the Latin word for the area ‘Mancunium’. Sometimes you’ll hear locals referred to as ‘Mancs’ for short.
Manchester has an abundance of charming characteristics, unusual places to visit and historic architecture (like the gorgeous, neo-Gothic Manchester Town Hall or stunning Manchester Central Library) that create a distinct sense of beauty around the city. The waterfront along Salford Quays has a modern magnificence, filled with curvy lines and striking architecture, especially at night when the lights reflect on the river.

With all cities we recommend you keep caution on your side, particularly with any expensive personal belongings or when in crowds, but in general you’re unlikely to experience any danger in Manchester.
