FAQs
Hampshire is known for its stunning natural landscapes, from the wild ponies and woodlands of the New Forest to the rolling hills of the South Downs. It’s also famous for its maritime heritage in Portsmouth and Southampton, historic sites like Winchester Cathedral and family attractions including Beaulieu’s National Motor Museum and Paultons Park – Home of Peppa Pig World. Plus, you’ve got easy access to lively coastal towns like Southsea and the Isle of Wight.
Hampshire doesn’t have a single capital, but Winchester is the historic county town, famous for its cathedral and medieval streets. For a more urban hub, Southampton is the largest city in the county with shopping, museums and cultural attractions.
Hampshire isn’t right next to Bath, but it’s within a couple of hours’ drive. Bath is to the north-west, so you could easily make a day trip from southern Hampshire towns or combine visits on a broader South England itinerary.
Southampton takes the title for the largest urban area, with a busy waterfront, historic ship connections, museums and plenty of restaurants and shops. Portsmouth comes close and is another major city to explore.
