FAQs
Absolutely! Southsea is a brilliant seaside spot with loads to enjoy, whether you're after a relaxing break or something more active. It’s part of Portsmouth, so you get the best of both worlds – a laid-back coastal vibe and easy access to city attractions. The long seafront is perfect for walks, bike rides or just sitting with an ice cream watching the waves. There’s plenty to do too – from exploring Southsea Castle and the D-Day Story Museum to checking out the arcades and rides at Clarence Pier. Add in independent shops, great cafes and regular events on Southsea Common, and you’ve got a destination that’s lively, welcoming and full of things to discover.
Southsea is known for its historic seafront and strong links to British naval history. It’s home to Southsea Castle, built by Henry VIII and the D-Day Story Museum, which tells the story of the Normandy landings. The area also has a reputation for its creative spirit, with places like the Hotwalls Studios showcasing local artists. Southsea’s piers – especially South Parade Pier – are iconic, and the town has a buzzing cultural scene with venues like the Kings Theatre and Wedgewood Rooms hosting live performances.
Southsea Beach is mostly made up of shingle, but there are patches of sand that appear at low tide. It stretches from Old Portsmouth to Eastney and is backed by a wide promenade, perfect for walking or cycling. There’s also a lovely recreation area nearby with Canoe Lake, play parks and gardens, making it a great spot for families.
Southsea is a district within the city of Portsmouth, located on Portsea Island. It’s not huge, but it packs a lot into a relatively small area. You’ll find beaches, parks, museums, shopping streets and entertainment venues all within walking distance. It’s easy to explore on foot or by bike, which makes it ideal for a short break or day trip.
Southsea is a vibrant seaside destination known for its scenic beaches, piers and promenade, all just steps from our Southsea hotel. Whether you're planning a fun family getaway or a romantic break for two, there's something for everyone! Palmerston Road is considered the main shopping street in Southsea. It’s home to a mix of well-known brands and independent shops, plus cafes and restaurants where you can take a break from browsing. There’s also a regular market, which is great for picking up local produce and handmade goods. Nearby Albert Road is another popular spot, especially for quirky boutiques, vintage stores and nightlife.
Yes, entry to Southsea Castle is completely free during its open season, which runs from April to October. You can explore the keep, walk the ramparts and learn about its history through exhibitions. There’s also a courtyard cafe that’s open year-round.
