FAQs
Wiltshire is a county of myths, legends and breathtaking landscapes. From ancient stone circles to medieval villages, it’s packed with history at every turn. You’ll also find rolling countryside, picturesque market towns and plenty of walking trails to explore. With Premier Inn hotels across the county, it’s easy to make a base and discover as much as you like, whether you’re here for a weekend or a longer stay.
Yes, Wiltshire is home to the world’s largest stone circle at Avebury, near Marlborough. Unlike Stonehenge, the Avebury stones actually encircle part of the village itself, making it an atmospheric and unusual place to wander. You can walk among the huge standing stones, visit the nearby Avebury Manor and Gardens and even stop for a bite in one of the traditional village pubs.
The county town of Wiltshire is Trowbridge, which is also the largest town. It has a history rooted in the woollen cloth industry and today is a busy centre with shops, cafes and cultural spots. That said, other towns like Salisbury, Chippenham, Swindon and Devizes are often popular with visitors because they each bring something unique, whether it’s Salisbury’s cathedral, Swindon’s museums or Devizes’ canalside walks.
Wiltshire is a landlocked county, so you won’t find a seaside beach here. But if you’re craving the feel of sand and water, there are still places to enjoy. Cotswold Water Park, just on the edge of the county, has lakes with sandy shores and spots for swimming, paddleboarding and picnicking. Wiltshire itself is full of rivers, canals and lakes where you can enjoy boat rides, watersports or a walk by the water’s edge. If you’re set on the sea, the south coast, including Dorset and Hampshire, is within easy driving distance for a day trip.
