FAQs
Wiltshire is a county of myths, legends and breathtaking landscapes. From ancient stone circles to medieval villages, it’s packed with history at every turn. You’ll also find rolling countryside, picturesque market towns and plenty of walking trails to explore. With Premier Inn hotels across the county, it’s easy to make a base and discover as much as you like, whether you’re here for a weekend or a longer stay.
Yes, Wiltshire is home to the world’s largest stone circle at Avebury, near Marlborough. Unlike Stonehenge, the Avebury stones actually encircle part of the village itself, making it an atmospheric and unusual place to wander. You can walk among the huge standing stones, visit the nearby Avebury Manor and Gardens and even stop for a bite in one of the traditional village pubs.
The county town of Wiltshire is Trowbridge, which is also the largest town. It has a history rooted in the woollen cloth industry and today is a busy centre with shops, cafes and cultural spots. That said, other towns like Salisbury, Chippenham, Swindon and Devizes are often popular with visitors because they each bring something unique, whether it’s Salisbury’s cathedral, Swindon’s museums or Devizes’ canalside walks.
Wiltshire is a landlocked county, so you won’t find a seaside beach here. But if you’re craving the feel of sand and water, there are still places to enjoy. Cotswold Water Park, just on the edge of the county, has lakes with sandy shores and spots for swimming, paddleboarding and picnicking. Wiltshire itself is full of rivers, canals and lakes where you can enjoy boat rides, watersports or a walk by the water’s edge. If you’re set on the sea, the south coast, including Dorset and Hampshire, is within easy driving distance for a day trip.
The most famous attraction in Wiltshire is Stonehenge, the World Heritage Site on Salisbury Plain near Amesbury. This prehistoric stone circle is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and a must-see on any trip to the county. Visitors can walk around the stones, learn about their mysterious origins at the visitor centre and get a real sense of the scale and wonder that has captivated people for thousands of years. Staying in a nearby Premier Inn means you can take your time exploring this world-famous site at your own pace.
There are plenty of other great destinations to add to your trip:
• Salisbury – Famous for its cathedral, home to the tallest spire in Britain and one of the best-preserved copies of Magna Carta. The medieval streets are perfect for a day of exploring, shopping, and eating out.
• The New Forest National Park – Just on the edge of Wiltshire, is a paradise for walkers, cyclists and wildlife lovers. You’ll spot free-roaming ponies and enjoy miles of woodland and open heath.
• Lacock – A beautiful village that feels like stepping back in time. With cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and Lacock Abbey, it’s often used as a filming location for period dramas and even Harry Potter.
There’s lots for adults to enjoy in Wiltshire, whether you’re into history, nature or food and drink:
• Historic sites – Explore Stonehenge and Avebury’s stone circles, Salisbury Cathedral or the ruins of Old Wardour Castle.
• Country walks and cycling – Take in the rolling downs, explore the White Horses carved into chalk hillsides or enjoy long rambles through the Wiltshire countryside.
• Food and drink – Relax in cosy pubs, sample local produce at farm shops or treat yourself to a vineyard or distillery tour.
• Museums and culture – Visit the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, STEAM Museum in Swindon or art galleries in Marlborough.
• Canal trips – Head to the Kennet & Avon Canal for leisurely boat rides or a stroll along the towpaths.
Wiltshire has plenty of attractions that don’t cost a penny:
• Stonehenge landscape walks – While there’s a fee to enter the visitor centre, you can enjoy beautiful walks across Salisbury Plain and see the stones from a distance.
• Avebury Stone Circle – Free to wander around the world’s largest stone circle and explore the surrounding village.
• Salisbury Cathedral Close – Entry to the cathedral is donation-based, but walking through the historic Close and around the grounds is completely free.
• Hiking the White Horses – Spot and walk up to the giant chalk horses carved into Wiltshire’s hillsides, like the ones at Westbury and Cherhill.
• Nature reserves and country parks – Wander through Savernake Forest, Grovely Woods or Pugneys Country Park for peaceful walks and picnics.
• Picturesque villages – Explore Lacock, Castle Combe and other postcard-perfect spots.
