FAQs
Cambridgeshire is officially part of the East of England region, which places it in the Southeast rather than the Midlands. While some parts of the county, like Peterborough, are geographically closer to the Midlands, the county as a whole is considered southern. It borders counties like Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk, which are all in the south.
Cambridgeshire is best known for the University of Cambridge, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. The county has a rich academic and scientific legacy, with Nobel Prize winners, groundbreaking research and historic architecture all centred around the university. It’s also famous for its flat Fenland landscapes, historic towns like Ely with its stunning cathedral and archaeological sites like Flag Fen and Must Farm, which have revealed some of the best-preserved Bronze Age dwellings ever found in the UK. The county played a key role in World War II aviation and the Cambridge American Cemetery commemorates American servicemen who fought during the war.
The largest city in Cambridgeshire is Peterborough, it’s located in the north-west of the county and is known for its impressive cathedral, historic sites and growing urban centre.
Cambridgeshire is one of the larger counties in England, with a mix of bustling cities, historic market towns and peaceful countryside. The landscape varies from the flat, open Fenlands in the north and east to rolling hills in the south and west. It’s spacious enough to offer plenty of variety, whether you're exploring nature, visiting cultural sites or enjoying a city break.
Cambridgeshire is packed with things to see and do, whether you're into history, nature, culture or outdoor adventures. The region has a rich past, with beautiful abbeys and ancient battlefields that date back to the War of the Roses. History lovers can explore sites like Ely Cathedral, Anglesey Abbey and Wimpole Estate, each offering a unique glimpse into the area’s heritage. If museums and architecture are more your thing, Cambridgeshire is a fantastic destination. The city of Cambridge is home to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Kettle’s Yard and the colleges of Cambridge University, which are open to visitors and full of architectural beauty and academic history. For those who prefer a more active lifestyle, the region is ideal for cycling through rolling countryside, boating along the Cam or walking scenic routes like the Gog Magog Hills and Fen Rivers Way. There are also plenty of nature reserves, including Wicken Fen, one of the oldest in the UK, where you can spot wildlife and enjoy peaceful trails. Families will find lots to enjoy too, from Shepreth Wildlife Park and Hamerton Zoo Park to interactive experiences at The Cambridge Science Centre. And if you're visiting for the university, staying near Cambridge gives you easy access to all the cultural and academic highlights.
