Absolutely! Chichester is a real gem on the South Coast. Whether you're wandering through the city’s Georgian streets, exploring the dramatic Chichester Cathedral or heading to the nearby beaches and South Downs, there’s something for everyone. It’s also packed with independent shops, cosy cafes and local restaurants, so it’s a great spot for a leisurely day trip or weekend getaway.
Yes, Chichester is one of the UK’s smaller cities, but that’s part of its charm! Despite its size, it punches well above its weight when it comes to things to see and do. You’ll find a compact city centre that’s easy to walk around, with historic buildings, green spaces, museums and great places to eat and drink all within close reach.
Chichester is most famous for its Cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century and features stunning architecture, including a rare medieval spire visible for miles. The city is also well known for its Roman heritage—you can still see parts of the ancient city walls and visit Fishbourne Roman Palace, just outside the centre. Chichester Festival Theatre is also a major draw, known for its top-quality productions and often a stepping stone for shows heading to the West End. Plus, nearby Goodwood Estate hosts world-class motorsport and horse racing events.
Chichester is packed with great places to eat, especially if you're into cosy cafes and quirky local restaurants. You’ll find plenty of choice for lunch or a sweet treat in town, with popular spots serving up everything from hearty dishes to light bites and cakes. Whether you're after rustic British fare or something a little more continental, Chichester’s food scene has something for everyone.
Chichester is home to some lovely green spaces perfect for a stroll or a laid-back picnic. Priory Park is right in the heart of the city, with historic walls and open lawns, and Litten Gardens is another peaceful spot nearby. If you’re willing to go slightly out of town, Eartham Wood is a beautiful, forest area just a short drive away, with amazing views and woodland walks.
Just a few miles north of Chichester, the Goodwood Estate is one of the region’s top attractions. This stunning 17th-century Jacobean house is still family-owned and hosts a variety of high-profile events throughout the year. From motorsports festivals and classic car shows to golf tournaments, air shows and even live music gigs, there’s always something exciting happening at Goodwood! For racing fans, Goodwood Racecourse is nearby and famous for its world-class horse racing events.
One of the best things about visiting Chichester is its proximity to the Sussex coastline. Just a short drive from the city is West Wittering Beach, a favourite among locals and tourists alike. This sandy beach is perfect for families and sunseekers, with its picturesque dunes, clean waters and views stretching across Chichester Harbour and towards the South Downs.
Yes, Chichester has several places to explore for history buffs and curious minds. The Fishbourne Roman Palace offers a glimpse into Roman Britain, with incredible mosaics and artefacts. For a more science-focused visit, the South Downs Planetarium and Science Centre offers engaging shows and interactive exhibits for all ages. Don’t miss the award-winning Novium Museum, built over the remains of a Roman bathhouse – it has a fantastic mix of ancient collections, local archaeology and rotating exhibitions showcasing the rich heritage of the Chichester District.
Head to Chichester Cathedral to take in the beautiful interior and peaceful cloisters. From there, explore the city walls and the Novium Museum, which is built over a Roman bathhouse and tells the story of the area’s rich past. Take a stroll through Priory Park or enjoy a longer walk in Eartham Wood if you're up for some countryside views. In the afternoon, you might fancy heading just outside the city to the Goodwood Estate or Fishbourne Roman Palace, or if the sun’s out, drive to West Wittering Beach for sea air and scenic views. Round off your day with dinner in town or catch a show at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
