FAQs
The main town in Shropshire is Shrewsbury, the county town and one of the most picturesque historic towns in England. Surrounded almost entirely by a loop of the River Severn, it’s a place where medieval history and modern life blend together. Shrewsbury is full of narrow cobbled streets, over 600 listed buildings, timber-framed houses and landmarks like Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury Abbey and Quarry Park. It’s also the birthplace of Charles Darwin and you can follow a Darwin-themed trail around town. Shrewsbury is lively too, with great independent shops, food markets and plenty of pubs and restaurants.
Shropshire is best known for its beautiful countryside and its role in shaping history. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a highlight, with miles of walking routes across hills like the Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc and the Stiperstones. The county is also world-famous as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, with the Ironbridge Gorge and its iconic cast-iron bridge now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond that, Shropshire is famous for its castles (like Ludlow Castle and Stokesay Castle), market towns and the Severn Valley Railway, a heritage line that runs steam trains through the countryside. Food is also part of its reputation, with Ludlow often called one of the UK’s top foodie towns.
What makes Shropshire special is the balance between history, countryside and peaceful towns. It’s one of England’s most rural counties that feels unspoiled and easy to escape into nature. You can climb hills in the morning, explore a medieval castle in the afternoon and finish the day in a cosy market-town pub. Plus, Shropshire is never too crowded, giving you the chance to enjoy places like Much Wenlock (the birthplace of the modern Olympics), Bridgnorth with its cliff railway or the town of Ludlow, known for food festivals and independent shops, at a relaxed pace.
Shropshire is especially famous for:
Shropshire Blue cheese, a rich and creamy, blue-veined cheese.
Fidget Pie, a savoury pie filled with ham, potatoes, onions and apples.
Shrewsbury Biscuits, crisp buttery biscuits dating back centuries.
Ludlow, in particular, is known for its gourmet food scene and annual food festival.
Farmers’ markets across the county also showcase local meats, ciders and cheeses, so food lovers will never run out of things to try.
Shropshire is packed with history and family-friendly days out. In Shrewsbury, you can explore Shrewsbury Castle and Abbey, while Whitchurch is home to the world’s oldest clockmakers. Newport and its market town feel is worth a stop too. A highlight is the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with museums and riverside walks, while in Bridgnorth you can ride the Severn Valley Railway or the cliff railway linking High and Low Town. Outdoors, the Shropshire Hills AONB, The Wrekin, Carding Mill Valley, and Stiperstones are perfect for walking. For castles and history, visit Ludlow Castle, Stokesay Castle or the stone circle at Mitchell’s Fold. Families will enjoy Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World, Attingham Park with its deer park and the hands-on Enginuity Museum. Add in Ludlow’s food festivals, Shrewsbury’s theatres and miles of rolling countryside, and you’ve got a county that’s great to explore year-round!
Shrewsbury – the historic county town with castles, abbeys and riverside walks.
Ludlow – a foodie heaven with a medieval castle and great independent shopping.
Ironbridge – home to ten museums and the world-famous Iron Bridge.
Bridgnorth – split into High Town and Low Town, connected by a cliff railway and great for views of the River Severn.
Much Wenlock – the birthplace of the modern Olympics, with a fascinating priory and lovely high street.
Oswestry – close to the Welsh border, known for its markets and Offa’s Dyke walking trail.
Shrewsbury and Whitchurch both claim ancient roots. Whitchurch is thought to be the oldest continuously inhabited town in Shropshire, dating back to Roman times when it was known as Mediolanum. Shrewsbury, however, grew into the county’s historic centre during the Saxon and Norman periods and still retains much of its medieval street layout. Both towns showcase Shropshire’s deep history, with Whitchurch being slightly older in terms of settlement.
Absolutely – the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of the county’s biggest draws. It’s a landscape of rolling hills, dramatic ridges and valleys, perfect for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. Highlights include:

The Stiperstones – a rugged ridge with quartzite tors.
Caer Caradoc – linked to ancient legends of King Caractacus.
The Wrekin – with panoramic views across 15 counties on a clear day.
The area is also dotted with picturesque village and heritage sites, perfect for a day out or a longer stay.
