FAQs
Yes – Oswestry is well worth a visit, especially if you like places with a bit of everything. This Shropshire market town has a mix of history, independent shops, countryside walks and local culture. The old hillfort just outside the town is a highlight, giving you sweeping views and a real sense of the area's ancient past. The town itself is great for pottering around, browsing markets and enjoying cafes and local events. It’s also a handy base for exploring the Welsh borderlands.
Oswestry doesn’t sit directly on a major river, but there are a few streams nearby. The River Morda flows close to the town, and the area has a network of canals and scenic walking routes, like the Montgomery Canal just outside Oswestry.
Oswestry is known for its ancient hillfort, which is one of the largest and best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in the UK. It’s also got a rich market tradition, with regular street markets and a popular indoor market. The town has strong cultural links to both England and Wales and is home to some well-known figures, including the poet Wilfred Owen. Its location right on the border gives it a unique identity.
