FAQs
Yes, Camberwell is absolutely worth a visit! It’s a lively, creative neighbourhood with a strong local identity and loads to explore. From green spaces like Burgess Park and Ruskin Park to the buzzing food scene, there’s something for every taste. Art lovers will enjoy the South London Gallery and events like the Camberwell Arts Festival, while pub-goers can hop between places. It’s a great spot to experience a different side of London!
Camberwell is known for its artistic and cultural vibe, thanks in part to the Camberwell College of Arts, which draws creatives from across the city. Historically, it was a village with healing springs and later became a middle-class suburb before evolving into a diverse urban area. The area has a rich history of music halls and theatres, and even lends its name to the rare Camberwell Beauty butterfly.
Camberwell covers a fairly compact area in South London. It includes neighbourhoods like Denmark Hill, Camberwell Green and parts of Peckham and Dulwich.
Camberwell is in Zone 2, which means it’s close to central London and well-connected by public transport, even though it doesn’t have its own Tube station.
Visitors to hotels in Camberwell will have all the sights and experiences of central London at their disposal but will also be able to see the best of the Camberwell district. With streets lined by well-preserved Georgian housing and a central green for relaxing, this district still gives a reprieve from central London attractions. What's more, Camberwell has developed into its own entity within the city and now has many cafes, restaurants and pubs that draw patrons from across the city. The Camberwell College of Arts means the area's a cultural hub as well, with the South London Gallery and House Café nearby. There’s plenty more to explore too. Burgess Park is ideal for walks, picnics and sports, while food lovers can enjoy standout spots like Zeret Kitchen for Ethiopian cuisine, Silk Road for bold Chinese dishes and Theo’s for sourdough pizza. Craft beer fans should check out Stormbird or Orbit Beers Taproom. For entertainment, the Blue Elephant Theatre hosts intimate performances, and the Camberwell Arts Festival brings the community together with exhibitions and events.
No, Camberwell doesn’t have a tube station, but it’s well-served by buses and nearby train stations. Denmark Hill and Loughborough Junction are the closest rail stations, offering overground and Thameslink services to central London.
Camberwell Grove is often considered one of the best streets in the area. It’s lined with beautiful Georgian houses and has a peaceful, leafy feel despite being close to the action. It’s also home to the Grove House Tavern, a local favourite for food and drinks. Camberwell Church Street is another hotspot, packed with restaurants, pubs and cafes, making it a great place to eat, drink and soak up the local vibe.
Camberwell has a mix of practical and quirky shopping options. You’ll find everything from fresh produce at the farmers’ market on Camberwell Green to vinyl records and art supplies. There are also independent grocery shops, bakeries and boutiques scattered along Denmark Hill and Camberwell Church Street. It’s not a major retail destination, but it’s great for browsing and picking up unique finds.
