Things To Do in Dundee
FAQs
Absolutely! Dundee is a vibrant, coastal city that blends history with a modern cultural scene, making it well worth a visit. Whether you’re into art, architecture, science, shopping or simply scenic walks, Dundee has something for everyone. It’s home to the V&A Dundee – Scotland’s first design museum – as well as historic landmarks like Broughty Castle and beautiful green spaces like Magdalen Green. With a laid-back vibe and plenty to explore, Dundee makes for a great city break or a base to discover more of Scotland’s east coast.
Dundee is famous for several things, both historic and modern. Traditionally, it was known for its “three Js” – jute, jam, and journalism – referring to its industrial roots. Today, the city is known for its cutting-edge design and innovation, especially since it became the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design. It’s also home to the V&A Dundee, the only V&A museum outside of London. Dundee is famous in the gaming world too, as the birthplace of Lemmings and the Grand Theft Auto series.
Dundee has grown in popularity thanks to its impressive cultural revival and riverside setting. Its popularity is fuelled by attractions like the V&A Dundee, top universities, family-friendly museums like the Dundee Science Centre and a thriving food and arts scene. It’s also an appealing base for exploring nearby gems like Broughty Ferry, the Angus Glens and St Andrews.
Dundee is a major cultural hub in Scotland with fantastic galleries like the V&A Dundee, Verdant Works and the Cooper Gallery, close to Dundee city centre and our Dundee Centre hotel. Dundee also has great interactive museums like the Dundee Science Centre, ideal for families with lots of hands-on scientific exhibits to keep the whole family occupied.
Broughty Castle was built at the end of the 15th century and has survived historic battles, particularly wars fought throughout the 16th century. Today Broughty Castle is a fascinating museum with a great range of exhibits, set on the mouth of the scenic River Tay. Other Dundee attractions to check out include Cox’s Stack, a gigantic 292-foot chimney and the 13th century Dudhope Castle by City Square.
For relaxing, open green spaces look no further than Craigtoun Country Park, with pristine lakes, gorgeous walking trails and much more to explore. Dundee’s oldest city park, Magdalen Green, is also worth the trip with beautiful riverside views.
Dundee has some fantastic places to shop like the Overgate Shopping Centre with a brilliant range of high-street destinations just a 15-minute drive from our Dundee West hotel, and the Wellgate Centre near the city centre with great discount brands.
Yes, Dundee FC play at Dens Park, a huge 11,850 capacity stadium under two miles from our Dundee Centre hotel.
Yes, Dundee is a very walkable city. The city centre is compact and easy to get around on foot, with most of the main attractions, shops, restaurants and museums located close together. The scenic waterfront, home to the V&A Dundee and Slessor Gardens, is perfect for a stroll. You can also walk along the River Tay or head into one of the city’s parks. Whether you’re exploring historic streets or checking out local cafés, Dundee’s well-connected footpaths make walking a great way to experience the city.
There are plenty of free things to enjoy in Dundee! Start with a wander around the V&A Dundee – it’s free to enter the main exhibitions. Visit the McManus Art Gallery & Museum for fascinating local history and beautiful artwork, all without spending a penny. Broughty Castle is another free museum with great views over the River Tay. If you love the outdoors, head to Magdalen Green, Camperdown Park or the Riverside Walkway.
