FAQs
Yes, Taunton is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking to unwind somewhere with a mix of history and the countryside. You can explore historic sites like Taunton Castle, soak up local life at one of the regular farmers’ markets or just enjoy a peaceful walk through Vivary Park or along the River Tone. The town is also a great base for exploring Somerset – Exmoor National Park, the Quantock Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the Somerset Levels are all nearby. Whether you're into walking, cycling or simply relaxing with a cream tea, Taunton gives you a lovely slice of West Country life without the crowds.
Taunton is best known for being the county town of Somerset, and it's long been a hub for agriculture and cider-making. The town has deep historical roots – dating back over 1,000 years – and played an important role during the English Civil War. It’s also known for its strong connection to cricket: the Cooper Associates County Ground is home to Somerset County Cricket Club and regularly hosts national and international matches. Taunton’s links to the military are also significant, especially through the town’s historical garrison and military museums.
Taunton is a mid-sized town, big enough to have good shops, places to eat and things to do, but small enough to feel relaxed and easy-going. You can walk from one end of the town centre to the other in about 20 minutes, and there’s a mix of historic buildings, green spaces and modern conveniences all within reach. So, if you’re after somewhere that’s easy to explore without feeling too remote, Taunton fits the bill nicely.
Taunton is known for its history and traditional West Country character. The Museum of Somerset, housed in a former castle, is one of its key landmarks, and gives you a great overview of the region’s story—from prehistoric times right through to the present day. The town is also recognised for its beautiful Victorian architecture, military heritage and as a gateway to some of Somerset’s most scenic landscapes. Locally, it’s seen as a centre for education and culture, thanks to places like Queen’s College and events like the Taunton Literary Festival. And with its strong cricket culture and green open spaces, it’s a place where people come to relax, learn a bit of history and enjoy the outdoors.
No, Taunton doesn’t have a beach itself – it’s located inland – but you’re not far from the coast if you’re up for a short drive. The nearest seaside towns are Minehead, Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare, all around 45 minutes to an hour away by car. These coastal spots are perfect for a day trip if you’re after some sea air, sandy beaches or traditional fish and chips.
There’s lots to do in and around Taunton, especially if you enjoy a mix of history, nature and local culture. You can start with the Museum of Somerset to get a sense of the area’s past, then take a stroll through Vivary Park – with gardens, mini golf and play areas for the kids. The River Tone is great for a waterside walk or even paddleboarding in the summer. Shoppers and foodies will enjoy the independent shops and regular farmers’ markets and there’s a lively events calendar including concerts, open-air theatre and sports fixtures. If you’re into nature, the nearby Quantock Hills are great for walking and cycling.
Yes! Taunton’s train station is located just north of the town centre and is part of the main railway line that connects London with the South West. That means you can get to and from major destinations like Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff and London Paddington pretty easily – making Taunton a great stop if you’re touring the region by train. The station itself has a decent waiting area, cafe and local transport links, so whether you’re arriving or heading out for a day trip, it’s well-equipped and easy to use.
Taunton’s shopping scene has a bit of everything – there are all the usual high street names you'd expect, plus some smaller independent stores that give it a more local feel. Orchard Shopping Centre is the main indoor area for well-known brands and around the town centre you'll find boutique stores selling homeware, gifts, books and antiques. The town also has a weekly farmers’ market with fresh local produce and handmade goods, which is worth a visit if you're into food or souvenirs. While it’s not a mega shopping destination, it’s a great place for a relaxed browse, especially if you enjoy supporting local businesses and discovering something a little different.
