FAQs
Haydock is best known for Haydock Park Racecourse, one of the UK’s leading horse racing venues, hosting major flat and jump races throughout the year. Historically, Haydock was a coal mining powerhouse, with up to 13 collieries operating during its peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The village also has a strong musical tradition, with the Haydock Male Voice Choir and Valley Brass Band playing a big role in the local community. Today, Haydock blends its industrial past with green spaces like Lyme & Wood Pits Country Park, which was developed on former mining land.
Haydock is roughly an equal distance between Liverpool and Manchester, but it’s slightly closer to Liverpool. The driving distance to Liverpool is about 15 miles, taking around 23 minutes by car, while Manchester is about 20 miles away, with a drive time of around 30 minutes.
Haydock is officially classified as a village, located within the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in Merseyside. Despite its village status it has a mix of residential areas, retail centres and industrial estates, giving it the feel of a small town in terms of amenities and layout.
Haydock covers a fairly compact area but includes several distinct neighbourhoods and is bisected by the A580 East Lancashire Road, which connects Liverpool and Manchester. The northern part of Haydock is more industrial, while the southern side is mainly residential.
