FAQs
Yes, Oldham is worth a visit, especially if you're exploring the Greater Manchester area. It’s a place where you can learn about Britain’s industrial past, enjoy some great countryside walks and dip into local arts and culture. The town is surrounded by scenic views of the Pennines, so it’s ideal if you like getting outdoors, but you’ll also find galleries, historic buildings and theatres if you're staying in town.
Oldham is most famous for its industrial heritage, particularly its role in the cotton industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its peak, Oldham had more cotton-spinning mills than anywhere else in the world and played a key role in the global textile trade.
The oldest known street in Oldham is believed to be Church Lane, which dates back to medieval times. It runs close to Oldham Parish Church (St Mary’s) and was part of the original route through the early settlement long before the town expanded during the Industrial Revolution. Church Lane and the surrounding area still show traces of Oldham’s older layout, with some historical buildings and cobbled sections that give you a glimpse of what the town might have looked like centuries ago.
Oldham has a strong connection to traditional northern English food, particularly meat and potato pies and rag pudding – a local favourite made from minced beef and onions wrapped in a suet pastry and steamed. You’ll find it in several bakeries and local cafes.
Yes, Oldham has a busy town centre that serves as the main hub for shopping, services and events. You’ll find a mix of high street brands, independent stores and market stalls around places like Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre and Tommyfield Market. The town centre is also where you’ll find key cultural spots like Oldham Gallery, Oldham Library and Parliament Square, which often hosts seasonal events and performances. It’s walkable, fairly compact, and easy to get around.
Oldham is surrounded by countryside, so there are some fantastic spots for walking. Here are a few worth checking out:
· Dovestone Reservoir – In the Saddleworth area, this is one of the most popular walking spots with scenic views, woodland trails and open moorland.
· Tandle Hill Country Park – Great for panoramic views of the Manchester skyline, plus woodland paths and picnic areas.
· Strinesdale Reservoir – Quieter than Dovestone, it’s ideal for a peaceful stroll with plenty of birdlife and nature.
· Alexandra Park – A Victorian park near the town centre with lakes, formal gardens and walking paths.
Yes, there’s lots to do in and around Oldham, especially if you’re into local history, walking or the arts. Highlights include:
· Oldham Coliseum Theatre – Known for quality productions and community shows.
· Gallery Oldham – A great mix of art, social history and natural history exhibitions.
· Local history walks – Including trails that explore the town’s mill heritage and old industrial sites.
· Spindles Shopping Centre and Tommyfield Market – Good for browsing local goods, food and fashion.
· Day trips to nearby Saddleworth villages – Places like Uppermill or Delph have canalside walks, cosy pubs and craft shops.
Oldham is fairly walkable, especially in and around the town centre, where shops, restaurants, tram stops and local attractions are all within easy walking distance. The layout is compact enough that you can explore the central area on foot without needing a car or public transport for short journeys. It’s easy to walk between key spots like Oldham Gallery, Spindles Shopping Centre, Oldham Central Metrolink stop, and local cafes or parks. If you're heading further out – to the countryside or surrounding villages – you’ll probably want to hop on a tram or bus, but for getting around the heart of the town, walking is a solid option.
