FAQs
Canning Town is known for its industrial heritage and riverside history in East London. Historically, it was a hub for the shipping and docklands industries, closely linked to the Royal Docks and the Thames Ironworks, the latter being the birthplace of West Ham United Football Club. Today, it’s more famous for being a fast-developing neighbourhood with great connections to big London attractions, including the ExCeL London exhibition centre, the O2 Arena and the Emirates Air Line Cable Car that crosses the Thames.
Canning Town is a compact district in the London Borough of Newham, located on the north side of the River Thames. While it’s not a huge area, it’s part of the wider Docklands regeneration zone, meaning it feels busier than its size might suggest. Most of the attractions, residential areas and transport links are all within easy walking distance, making it simple for visitors to explore on foot or by public transport.
Canning Town is known for its Docklands history, riverside regeneration and transport links that connect to the heart of London and nearby attractions. It’s home to Bridge House 2, a nod to its music scene heritage, and sits close to ExCeL London, the Royal Docks and Bow Creek Ecology Park. Many people also associate Canning Town with West Ham United’s historic roots and its place in the story of London’s industrial past.
Canning Town is believed to have been named after George Canning, the British Prime Minister in the 1820s. The area began to grow as part of London’s industrial expansion, with workers settling there to be near the docks and factories that lined the Thames. Over time, it evolved from a docklands worker community into the urban riverside district
Canning Town is a fast-developing area in East London with great transport links via the DLR and Jubilee Line, making it easy to explore nearby attractions. Visit Bridge House 2, the modern continuation of the area’s iconic music venue, and head to ExCeL London at Royal Victoria Dock for events and exhibitions. For a bit of adventure, ride the Emirates Air Line Cable Car for amazing views across the Thames, or enjoy a peaceful walk at Bow Creek Ecology Park. Canning Town is also just a short hop from Canary Wharf, Stratford’s Westfield shopping centre, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London Stadium and the O2 Arena for concerts and entertainment. Canning Town is a handy base for exploring East London’s riverside spots, shopping hubs and big-name attractions.
Canning Town is served by both the Jubilee Line on the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). These connections make it quick and easy to reach central London, Canary Wharf, Stratford and London City Airport. It’s a great base if you’re exploring East London or heading to events at ExCeL London or the O2 Arena.
Canning Town is in London Travel Zone 2/3, meaning it’s classed as a boundary station between the two zones. This is handy because it makes transport tickets slightly more flexible when you’re moving around East London or heading into central London for sightseeing.
Canning Town itself has everyday local shops and markets, but it’s not known as a major shopping destination. However, it’s perfectly placed for bigger retail hubs nearby. You can hop on the Jubilee Line or DLR to reach Canary Wharf for high-street and designer stores or head to Westfield Stratford City, one of the largest shopping centres in Europe, which is just a short ride away.
