FAQs
Yes, Burton-on-Trent is definitely worth a visit—especially if you’re a fan of brewing history! The town has a rich heritage in beer making and is home to the National Brewery Centre, where you can explore brewing history, vintage vehicles and even sample a pint or two. But there’s more than just beer! Lovely riverside walks along the River Trent, nearby National Forest trails and family-friendly attractions like Branston Water Park make it a great stop for all kinds of visitors.
Burton is best known for its brewing legacy. In fact, it’s been at the heart of British beer production for centuries thanks to its mineral-rich water, which is perfect for brewing. The town was once home to dozens of breweries and exported beer all over the world. Even today, some major brewing companies still operate here. Beyond beer, Burton is also known for its links to the River Trent and its role in England’s industrial past.
Burton-on-Trent has a long history that dates back over a thousand years. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but it really began to grow as a town in the medieval period, especially around Burton Abbey, which was founded in the 11th century. Its fame as a brewing centre began to rise in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The River Trent flows right through Burton-on-Trent which is one of the major rivers in England and is popular for walking and spotting wildlife. The river has also played an important part in Burton’s history—especially when it came to transporting beer by boat in the town’s brewing heyday.
Burton is inland, so you’ll need to travel a bit to reach the coast. One of the nearest traditional seaside towns is Skegness, on the Lincolnshire coast. It’s around a two-hour drive and has sandy beaches, amusement arcades and fish and chips. If you’re happy to drive a little further, places like Weston-super-Mare or Blackpool also make for fun day trips or weekend getaways from Burton.
Burton has a good mix of things to see and do. You can visit the National Brewery Centre, enjoy the peaceful Burton Washlands and Stapenhill Gardens or check out independent shops and cafes in the town centre. If you’re into the outdoors, Branston Water Park and the nearby National Forest offer plenty of space to walk or cycle. For families, there are parks, nature trails and a few soft play centres and leisure facilities.
Yes, it does! Burton-on-Trent railway station is just outside the town centre and offers regular services to places like Birmingham, Derby and Nottingham. It’s a handy location if you’re arriving by train or planning to explore other nearby areas during your stay.
One of the oldest surviving buildings in Burton is the Abbey Inn, which dates back to the 14th century and was once part of the old Burton Abbey complex. The inn has been extended and altered over the years, but it still retains its historic charm. You can even stop in for a drink or meal, making it a great way to enjoy a bit of the town’s medieval history up close.
