FAQs
Not exactly – Walsall is its own town, but it's often associated with Birmingham because it's part of the West Midlands metropolitan area. It's only about 8 miles from Birmingham city centre, so they're definitely close neighbours, and they share strong transport links.
Walsall is best known for its historic leather industry. At one time, it was considered the leather capital of Britain, producing everything from saddles and bridles to high-end handbags and gloves. In fact, Walsall-made leather goods have even been used by the Royal Family! Today, you can still see this proud legacy at the Walsall Leather Museum. The town is also known for its manufacturing background, vibrant local arts scene and open green spaces like the Walsall Arboretum.
Walsall has been around for centuries – its origins trace back to at least the 11th century, when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Over time, it grew from a small market town into an important industrial hub during the Industrial Revolution. So, Walsall is steeped in history, with over 1,000 years of stories to tell!
Walsall might feel like a town, but it's actually a fairly large one. While it has the community feel of a smaller town, it offers a surprising amount of variety – from bustling shopping centres and arts venues to parks and family attractions.
