FAQs
Basingstoke is known for its mix of modern and local history. It’s home to Festival Place, one of the South’s largest shopping centres, and the Milestones Museum, where you can step back in time and walk through cobbled streets from the Victorian era. It also has strong roots in industry and innovation, with historical ties to companies like Thornycroft (shipbuilders) and the AA. On the cultural side, the town is proud of The Anvil, a concert hall with some of the best acoustics in the UK.
Yes, Basingstoke is definitely worth a visit—especially if you enjoy a good mix of shopping, history and entertainment. Whether you’re catching a show at The Anvil, exploring the Milestones Museum or taking the kids to the Leisure Park for bowling and ice skating, there’s plenty to keep you busy. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby countryside and historical landmarks like Basing House or The Vyne.
It’s not a city, but it’s certainly a large and well-developed town, Basingstoke is one of the biggest towns in Hampshire. You’ll find everything you’d expect from a major town—shopping centres, theatres, parks, restaurants and good transport links—without the bustle of a big city.
While Basingstoke isn’t by the coast, you’re not too far from some great seaside spots. Southsea in Portsmouth is around an hour’s drive away and offers a traditional seafront, pier and funfair. Hayling Island is also nearby and is great for sandy beach days and watersports. If you’re happy to travel a bit further, Brighton and Bournemouth are around 90 minutes away by car or train, perfect for a day trip to the seaside.
