FAQs
Blackheath is known for its huge open heath, one of the largest areas of common land in London, which has been the backdrop for centuries of history. It was the rallying point for the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381 and the starting line for the London Marathon. It’s also home to England’s first golf club, founded in 1608. The area has a rich royal past, with monarchs like Henry V and Charles II passing through, and historic buildings like Ranger’s House and The Pagoda adding to its legacy.
Absolutely! Blackheath is a brilliant spot for a relaxed day out. You can stroll across the heath, enjoy a picnic or fly a kite. The village is packed with independent cafes, pubs and restaurants and it’s right next to Greenwich Park and the Royal Observatory. There’s also a lively calendar of events, including one of London’s biggest fireworks displays on Guy Fawkes Night. Whether you’re into history, food or just want some fresh air, it’s a great place to explore.
Blackheath is in Zone 3 on the London transport map. It’s well-connected by Southeastern trains, with direct services to Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria, making it easy to get into central London.
Blackheath is near the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham and includes areas like Blackheath Village and Blackheath Standard. Despite being part of London, it feels spacious with plenty of room to roam.
Blackheath doesn’t have its own tube station, but it’s served by Blackheath railway station, which is right in the centre of the village. If you’re looking for the nearest tube, Greenwich Station (on the DLR and Jubilee line) is about a 20-minute walk through the park. The train from Blackheath to central London takes around 20-30 minutes.
There’s loads for families to enjoy! The heath itself is perfect for running around, kite flying and picnics. Nearby Greenwich Park has a playground and the Royal Observatory, which is great for curious minds. Gootopia in Lewisham is a fun slime workshop experience for younger kids. You’ll also find soft play centres, swimming pools and leisure centres nearby. During the holidays, look out for fairs and events on the heath.
Start with a walk across Blackheath Common then head into Blackheath Village for coffee or lunch. Visit Ranger’s House for art and history or browse the Bookshop on the Heath for rare finds. For food, try Buenos Aires Café for steaks or Hand Made Food for seasonal dishes. Pubs like the Hare & Billet and Princess of Wales are great for a relaxed drink. On Sundays, the Blackheath Farmers’ Market is a must for fresh produce and local treats.
Yes, and that’s one of the things people love most about it. Despite being in London, Blackheath feels like a countryside village, with its green spaces, Georgian houses and independent shops. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a coffee, browse boutiques and enjoy a peaceful walk, all without leaving London.
