FAQs
Beckenham is known for its rich history and green spaces, but it’s also got some cool cultural connections. David Bowie lived here in the late 1960s and even wrote Life on Mars on the bandstand in Croydon Road Recreation Ground. Enid Blyton, the beloved children’s author, spent her early years in Beckenham too. The town is also home to St George’s Church, which has the oldest lychgate in England, and Beckenham Place Park, a huge park with a wild swimming lake and a Georgian mansion that hosts events and weddings.
Yes, Beckenham is officially part of Greater London. It sits within the London Borough of Bromley and has been considered part of London since 1965. Before that, it was part of Kent, which is why some locals still refer to it that way. But today, it’s a London suburb with great transport links and access to all the perks of city life.
Beckenham is known for being a well-connected town with a mix of history, nature and culture. It’s got beautiful parks like Kelsey Park and Beckenham Place Park and a lively high street full of independent cafes and shops. It’s also known for its theatre scene, with the Beckenham Theatre Centre hosting regular performances in one of the smallest auditoriums in the country.
Beckenham is one of the larger towns in the Bromley borough and includes several neighbourhoods like Clock House, New Beckenham and Beckenham Hill. Despite its size, it still feels quite walkable and easy to explore.
Beckenham’s got loads to offer, whether you're after a chilled day out or something more active. Kelsey Park is a local favourite, with its peaceful lake and rose garden. If you're feeling sporty, Croydon Road Recreation Ground has tennis courts, basketball hoops and a cafe to unwind in. Beckenham High Street is buzzing with shops, from fancy boutiques to quirky independents. You can also check out Beckenham Place Park for wild swimming and woodland walks, or pop into Bethlem Museum of the Mind for some fascinating history and art. Cator Park is perfect for a quiet stroll by the rivers and Langley Park Golf Club is ideal if you fancy a round of golf. History buffs will love St George’s Church and theatre fans can catch a show at Beckenham Theatre. Art lovers should swing by Rare Interior Art, and if you're into cricket, The County Ground is the place to be.
Absolutely! Beckenham has a few train stations, with Beckenham Junction being the main one. From there, you can get to London Victoria in about 20 minutes. Other nearby stations include Clock House, New Beckenham, Kent House and Beckenham Hill, making it super convenient for getting around London and beyond.
Yes, shopping in Beckenham is a treat! The high street is packed with a mix of well-known brands and independent gems. You’ll find everything from fashion and homeware to books and gifts. Places like Gallery Seventeen, The Runner’s Shop and Beckenham Bookshop are local favourites. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants to take a break in between browsing.
Definitely! Whether you’re into nature, history, shopping or just relaxing, Beckenham has something for everyone. Spend time in its parks, explore the high street, grab a bite at one of its many cafes or catch a show at the local theatre. It’s close enough to central London for a day trip but has a peaceful vibe that makes it feel like a proper getaway.
