FAQs
Yes, St Andrews is absolutely worth a visit! This coastal town in Fife is packed with history, character and stunning scenery. Whether you’re drawn by its world-famous golf courses, historic university or medieval architecture, there’s plenty to explore. You can wander through ancient ruins, enjoy a walk along beautiful beaches or browse the independent shops and cosy cafés in town.
St Andrews is best known as the "Home of Golf", where the sport was first played over 600 years ago. It’s home to the iconic Old Course, one of the most prestigious and historic golf courses in the world. But golf aside, St Andrews is also famous for its ancient university—founded in 1413 and for its connections to British royalty, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, who met while studying there. The town also boasts beautiful medieval ruins, long sandy beaches and a walkable town centre.
St Andrews is steeped in history going back over a thousand years. It was once the religious capital of Scotland, named after Saint Andrew, the country’s patron saint, and became an important site of pilgrimage in medieval times. The cathedral was once the largest church in Scotland, and the town also played a key role in Scotland’s religious and educational development. Its university, founded in the 15th century, has educated generations of scholars and continues to be a centre of learning today.
