FAQs
Yes, St Andrews is absolutely worth a visit! This coastal town in Fife is packed with history, character and stunning scenery. Whether you’re drawn by its world-famous golf courses, historic university or medieval architecture, there’s plenty to explore. You can wander through ancient ruins, enjoy a walk along beautiful beaches or browse the independent shops and cosy cafés in town.
St Andrews is best known as the "Home of Golf", where the sport was first played over 600 years ago. It’s home to the iconic Old Course, one of the most prestigious and historic golf courses in the world. But golf aside, St Andrews is also famous for its ancient university—founded in 1413 and for its connections to British royalty, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, who met while studying there. The town also boasts beautiful medieval ruins, long sandy beaches and a walkable town centre.
St Andrews is steeped in history going back over a thousand years. It was once the religious capital of Scotland, named after Saint Andrew, the country’s patron saint, and became an important site of pilgrimage in medieval times. The cathedral was once the largest church in Scotland, and the town also played a key role in Scotland’s religious and educational development. Its university, founded in the 15th century, has educated generations of scholars and continues to be a centre of learning today.
St Andrews offers a great mix of history, coastal beauty and cultural attractions. Start with a visit to the St Andrews Cathedral ruins, once Scotland’s largest church, and climb St Rule’s Tower for stunning views. History buffs will also enjoy exploring St Andrews Castle, perched on the cliffs with an underground siege tunnel to discover. If you're a golf fan, don't miss the British Golf Museum and a stroll around the iconic Old Course. You can unwind on West Sands Beach or take in the scenery with a walk along the Fife Coastal Path. The town is also full of cosy cafés, art galleries, and independent shops.
Yes, St Andrews is very walkable. The town centre is compact, and most of the main attractions—including the Cathedral, Castle, University buildings and Old Course —are all within easy walking distance. The cobbled streets and coastal paths make it great for exploring on foot, whether you're sightseeing, shopping or just enjoying the sea air.
There’s plenty to enjoy in St Andrews without spending a penny! You can wander the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and the grounds of St Andrews Castle (though there's a fee to go inside). Enjoy a scenic walk along West Sands Beach or the Fife Coastal Path for incredible views. The Botanic Garden is free to enter on selected days or for children and students. You can also visit St Salvator’s Chapel, which often hosts free concerts and services.
St Andrews town centre has a great mix of independent boutiques, high-street favourites and specialty shops. You’ll find popular names alongside local favourites and several artisan gift and craft shops. There are also golf stores selling everything from branded apparel to souvenirs, and food shops featuring local produce.
