FAQs
Uttoxeter is most famous for its racecourse, which attracts visitors from all over the UK for its horse racing events throughout the year, including the popular Midlands Grand National. The town is also known for its historic market, which has been running for centuries and its deep roots in English history – it even appears in the Domesday Book! Uttoxeter also has ties to Samuel Johnson, the famous writer and lexicographer, who once did penance in the town’s market square.
Absolutely! Uttoxeter is a lovely spot for anyone who enjoys a mix of the countryside, history and relaxed small-town life. It’s surrounded by rolling Staffordshire hills, so there are plenty of walking trails and scenic drives nearby. You’ll find cosy pubs, a range of local shops and some great cafes for a quiet afternoon. Plus, it’s ideally located for exploring nearby attractions like Alton Towers, the Peak District National Park and Trentham Gardens, so you can easily make a weekend or longer break of it.
What makes Uttoxeter stand out is its blend of heritage and heart. The town still feels authentically English, with a traditional market square, a beautiful parish church and historic buildings like the Old Talbot Inn. It also has a strong sense of community, from race days to local fairs and markets, there’s nearly always something happening. Its location is another plus: you get the peace of a market town but with easy access to some of the Midlands’ top attractions.
Uttoxeter is part of the East Staffordshire Borough, within the county of Staffordshire. The borough also includes Burton upon Trent, known for its brewing heritage.
The closest major cities are Derby and Stoke-on-Trent, both around a 30-minute drive away. Stafford, Burton upon Trent and Lichfield are also nearby, making Uttoxeter a great base if you want to explore the wider area without staying in a busy city
There’s plenty to enjoy! You can:
• Spend a day at Uttoxeter Racecourse for an exciting race meeting.
• Explore the local market for fresh produce, crafts and gifts.
• Visit St Mary’s Church and the town centre’s historic buildings.
• Enjoy a traditional meal or afternoon tea in one of the local pubs or cafes.
• Take a relaxing walk along the nearby Staffordshire Way or Doveridge countryside.
• If you’re into history, the Dove Valley has lots of local landmarks and walking routes.
Families are spoiled for choice! Just a short drive away is Alton Towers Resort, one of the UK’s biggest theme parks, perfect for thrill-seekers of all ages. For something a bit calmer, Peak Wildlife Park and Trentham Monkey Forest are both great family days out. Closer to town, kids can enjoy local play parks, soft play centres or a family meal after exploring the market and shops. There are also great countryside picnic spots and walking trails where kids can run around and explore nature.
Yes, it’s a traditional English market town. Uttoxeter’s market dates back hundreds of years and is still held in the town square. You’ll find friendly stallholders selling everything from local produce to handmade crafts. The market gives the town a real sense of community and is one of the best ways to experience its welcoming local atmosphere.
