Absolutely! Barnsley is a great place to explore if you're after a mix of history, nature and local culture. It’s got deep roots in coal mining and glassmaking and you can still feel that heritage in places like the Experience Barnsley Museum and the Elsecar Heritage Centre But it’s not all about the past, Barnsley has reinvented itself with green spaces, art galleries and a lively town centre. Whether you're into walking trails, browsing markets or catching live music, there's plenty to enjoy. Plus, it's surrounded by stunning countryside and close to the Peak District, making it a great base for day trips.
Barnsley is most famous for its coal mining history and glassmaking industry, which played a huge role in shaping the town during the Industrial Revolution. It’s also known for its long-standing market, which dates back over 700 years and its strong tradition of brass bands that originated in mining communities. On the food front, the Barnsley Chop—a hefty lamb cut—is a local favourite.
The closest major city to Barnsley is Sheffield, which is just about 12 miles away. Wakefield is also nearby, roughly 9 miles to the north. Both cities are easy to reach by train or car and make great day trips if you're staying in Barnsley. Leeds and Doncaster are also within a short drive, giving you plenty of options for exploring the wider region

There’s loads to do in Barnsley without spending a penny. You can visit Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens, which has lovely grounds, a playground and free entry to the museum. The Cooper Gallery in the town centre is a great spot for art lovers and it’s free to enter. Experience Barnsley Museum is another must-see, packed with local history and interactive exhibits. If you fancy a wander, head to Elsecar Park and Reservoir or explore the Victorian Arcade for quirky shops. And if you're visiting in summer or December, keep an eye out for Barnsley Live and the Christmas Market, which are free community events full of music and festive fun.
Barnsley town centre is buzzing with things to do. You can shop at The Glass Works, which has high street brands and independent retailers, plus a cinema and bowling alley. Barnsley Market is right in the centre and is great for picking up fresh produce, handmade goods and local treats. For culture, visit Experience Barnsley Museum and The Cooper Gallery, both within walking distance. If you're into food, Market Kitchen has a mix of street food and sit-down spots. And for nightlife, the Victorian Arcade has cool bars and live music venues.

Bed linen and towels - laundering all our linen and towels at over 60°C to thermally disinfect them, so you can enjoy a great night’s sleep. We’ve also placed spare pillows in a zip-up bag, for extra peace of mind.
Equipping our teams - providing our team members with all the equipment and sanitisers they need, as well as always operating in the safest way possible for our teams and guests.
A generous serving of safety - you can relax knowing that enhanced cleaning measures are in place throughout our restaurants. Tables are cleaned between visits and contactless payment is in place too, so you can dine safely and comfortably with us every time.
Clean on request - if you'd like your room cleaned during your stay with us, just let us know at reception and use the handy door hanger on the back of your door by 12pm each day.
Most Premier Inns have specially-adapted rooms allowing easier access for customers with disabilities. If there is no specially-adapted room available at the hotel of your choice, we will be happy to offer you alternative accommodation at a nearby Premier Inn. If you have difficulty walking, but do not need a specially-adapted room, please feel free to request a room near reception on the ground floor for easy access.
