FAQs
Yes, Petersfield is definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re after a mix of countryside escapes and a lively market-town atmosphere. It’s nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park, so it’s surrounded by rolling hills, walking trails and picture-perfect views. The town itself has plenty going on too, from historic buildings and traditional markets to cosy cafes and independent shops.
Petersfield is a town, not a village. Despite its relatively small size, it’s a bustling hub for the surrounding countryside with good transport links, a thriving town square and all the amenities you’d expect. It feels much bigger than a village thanks to its shops, eateries, markets and cultural events.
Petersfield is known for its stunning setting in the South Downs National Park and for being a classic English market town. Its regular market in the central square has been running for centuries and remains a highlight for visitors. The town is also famous for Petersfield Heath, a historic common with lakes, walking trails and ancient burial mounds, as well as for its links to literary and cultural figures such as H.G. Wells, who once lived here.
Petersfield is a small but lively market town, with a friendly community feel while still being large enough to support a range of shops, restaurants and activities. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, so you can enjoy the town centre and nearby attractions without needing to travel far.
Yes, Petersfield is well-known for its traditional markets. There’s a regular market usually held twice a week in the town square where you’ll find everything from fresh local produce to clothes and crafts. Usually on the first Sunday of every month, there’s also a farmers’ market, showcasing the best local food and drink from Hampshire and the South Downs. These markets are a big draw for visitors and a great way to experience the local community.
There’s plenty to do in Petersfield, whether you’re staying for a day or a weekend. You can wander around the town square and explore the markets, enjoy green spaces like Petersfield Heath with its boating lake and wildlife or visit cultural spots like the Flora Twort Gallery and Petersfield Museum, which delve into the town’s history and art. Nature lovers can use Petersfield as a base for walking and cycling in the South Downs, while families might enjoy a picnic in the Heath or exploring nearby country parks. The town also has a good choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants for relaxing after a day out.
Yes, Petersfield has its own train station, making it easy to reach whether you’re coming from London, Portsmouth or other parts of the South East. It sits on the Portsmouth Direct Line, so you can get into London Waterloo in just over an hour or down to the coast in less than 30 minutes.
Petersfield is perfectly placed for exploring some fantastic nearby attractions. The South Downs National Park surrounds the town, with highlights like Butser Hill and Queen Elizabeth Country Park just a short drive away. For history lovers, the nearby city of Winchester with its famous cathedral is well worth a visit, and Portsmouth’s historic dockyard is also close by. Petworth House and Uppark House are stately homes nearby for a day of history and gardens. If you’re travelling with kids, Marwell Zoo and the beaches along the south coast are within easy reach too.
