Yes, Matlock is well worth a visit, especially if you enjoy being surrounded by nature and history. It’s located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, making it a great spot for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and rock climbing. The town itself has a lovely riverside setting and several interesting attractions, including the Heights of Abraham with its cable car and underground caverns. Plus, it’s close to other beautiful spots like Matlock Bath and Chatsworth House, so you can easily explore more of the area.
Matlock is a medium-sized town, larger than a village but still retains a relaxed atmosphere. The town centre is compact, with shops, cafes, pubs and local services within easy walking distance. It’s big enough to have everything you need.
Matlock is famous for its history as a Victorian spa town, where people used to come for the healing waters. Today, it’s best known for the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park with a cable car, stunning views and underground tours of old lead mines. Matlock’s location in the Derbyshire Dales also makes it a popular destination for exploring the natural beauty of the Peak District. The nearby village of Matlock Bath, with its cliffside setting and riverside walks, is also well known as a traditional tourist spot.

For walkers, High Tor offers one of the best viewpoints in the area, and there are plenty of ways to get active with hiking, caving, canoeing, climbing and more available nearby. If you're up for a short drive, Chatsworth House is a grand estate with gardens and historic rooms to explore. Whether you're after adventure or a relaxing day out, Matlock has something for everyone.
Matlock itself doesn’t have a beach since it’s inland and situated along a river valley rather than the coast. However, it’s surrounded by beautiful countryside and riverside spots where you can enjoy riverside walks, picnics, and paddling in warmer months.
