FAQs
Absolutely! Caerphilly is a lively town where history meets fun. Its medieval castle (more on that soon!) and regular festivals, like the cheese extravaganza, give it a festive feel. Whether you’re into heritage, local treats or scenic walks, it’s a great place to spend a few memorable days.
Caerphilly castle was built in the 13th century is Wales’s largest and the UK’s third-largest. It’s renowned for its clever concentric defences and a moat that creates a magical, almost floating look. A particular favourite among visitors is the south-east tower, known for its dramatic lean. Caerphilly is also famous for its cheese. The town lends its name to the crumbly white cheese that’s enjoyed across Wales and beyond, with an annual festival to celebrate it, complete with races, re-enactments and plenty of local food and fun.
Caerphilly is a medium-sized town—big enough to have plenty of shops, cafes and things to do, but still compact enough to explore on foot. The wider county borough stretches across the valleys and includes other towns like Blackwood, Bargoed and Risca, which makes it a great base for day trips around South Wales.
Caerphilly has been a settled area for nearly 2,000 years, starting with a Roman fort around AD 75. The town as we know it really grew in the Middle Ages alongside the castle and later became an important coal-mining community during the Industrial Revolution. Today, you’ll find a mix of history, green valleys and modern living all rolled into one.
