FAQs
Yes, Newport is definitely worth a visit! Set along the banks of the River Usk in South Wales, this lively city has a mix of history and culture. It’s less crowded than Cardiff but still packed with things to do—from historic landmarks like the Newport Transporter Bridge to peaceful walks along the canals and wetlands.
Newport is best known for its iconic Transporter Bridge, one of only a few still operating in the world. More recently, Newport gained attention for hosting the 2014 NATO Summit at the Celtic Manor Resort, putting it on the international stage. The city also has a strong musical heritage, once known for its buzzing live music scene in the 1990s.
What makes Newport special is its blend of history and contemporary culture. You can walk from Roman remains at Caerleon to a cutting-edge arts venue like The Riverfront Theatre in one afternoon. The city also has scenic green spaces, like the Newport Wetlands Reserve. Also, its location—right between Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons—makes it an ideal base for exploring South Wales.
Newport’s roots go back to Roman times, with the nearby town of Caerleon once serving as a Roman fortress. However, Newport as we know it began to grow in importance during the medieval period, developing as a market town and port. It became a city in 2002, but its history stretches over 1,800 years.
