Woking is known for being a lively commuter town in Surrey with excellent transport links to London, making it a popular spot for those who want a mix of town and country living. Wells wrote The War of the Worlds while living in Woking, and you’ll find nods to the novel around town, including a striking Martian tripod sculpture. The closest major city to Woking is London, which is just 25 minutes away by train. It’s one of the reasons Woking is so popular with commuters. Guildford, another charming and historic town, is also nearby – around 20 minutes by train or car. 

Woking has been around for a long time! Its roots go back to Saxon times, with the town first mentioned in records as early as the 9th century. The name “Woking” comes from “Wocca’s people,” referring to a Saxon chieftain. Over the centuries, it’s grown from a small village into a vibrant and diverse town with a mix of modern development and historic charm.
