Woking is most famous for being the setting of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, and the town proudly celebrates this literary heritage. It’s also home to the McLaren Group, with their headquarters and Technology Centre located nearby – a big draw for motorsport fans. Woking also has a thriving arts scene and green spaces to explore like Woking Park.
The closest major city to Woking is London, which is just 25 minutes away by train. It’s one of the reasons Woking is so popular with commuters. Guildford, another charming and historic town, is also nearby – around 20 minutes by train or car.
Woking has been around for a long time! Its roots go back to Saxon times, with the town first mentioned in records as early as the 9th century. The name “Woking” comes from “Wocca’s people,” referring to a Saxon chieftain. Over the centuries, it’s grown from a small village into a vibrant and diverse town with a mix of modern development and historic charm.
