FAQs
Woking is known for being a lively commuter town in Surrey with excellent transport links to London, making it a popular spot for those who want a mix of town and country living. It’s also well-known for its modern town centre, great shopping and links to sci-fi. H.G. Wells wrote The War of the Worlds while living in Woking, and you’ll find nods to the novel around town, including a striking Martian tripod sculpture. The town also has strong arts and theatre connections through the New Victoria Theatre and The Lightbox, a brilliant arts and heritage centre.
Woking is most famous for being the setting of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, and the town proudly celebrates this literary heritage. It’s also home to the McLaren Group, with their headquarters and Technology Centre located nearby – a big draw for motorsport fans. Woking also has a thriving arts scene and green spaces to explore like Woking Park.
The closest major city to Woking is London, which is just 25 minutes away by train. It’s one of the reasons Woking is so popular with commuters. Guildford, another charming and historic town, is also nearby – around 20 minutes by train or car.
Woking has been around for a long time! Its roots go back to Saxon times, with the town first mentioned in records as early as the 9th century. The name “Woking” comes from “Wocca’s people,” referring to a Saxon chieftain. Over the centuries, it’s grown from a small village into a vibrant and diverse town with a mix of modern development and historic charm.
Absolutely! There’s plenty to see and do in Woking. Culture lovers will enjoy The Lightbox, a gallery and museum offering exhibitions and family-friendly events. The New Victoria Theatre brings in West End shows, comedy and live music. You can unwind in Woking Park or take a walk along the Basingstoke Canal. Shoppers will find big-name brands in The Peacocks Centre, while foodies can explore a diverse range of restaurants and cafes. From live entertainment to relaxing green spaces, Woking has something for everyone.
Woking might not be a wild party town, but it has a surprisingly good nightlife scene. There are plenty of cosy pubs, lively bars and restaurants for a relaxed evening. The New Victoria Theatre offers a great night of entertainment, and for something more upbeat, you’ll find local spots with live music, DJ nights and events. It’s more of a chilled, sociable night out than a full-on clubbing experience – perfect for those who enjoy good food, good company and a bit of live entertainment.
Woking is a great place for a family day out. Woking Park is a top pick, with play areas, splash zones in summer, and wide open spaces to run around. The Lightbox often has hands-on exhibitions and creative activities for kids. You can also take a peaceful stroll or cycle along the Basingstoke Canal or pop into Big Apple Fun Centre for bowling and soft play. If you're visiting during the holidays, look out for children’s shows at the theatre or special events at local venues – there’s usually something going on!
While there isn’t a river flowing directly through Woking town centre, the town is home to the Basingstoke Canal. This historic waterway runs right through Woking and offers a peaceful towpath perfect for walks, cycling or a relaxing boat trip. Nearby, you’ll also find the River Wey Navigation—a historic man-made channel connected to the natural River Wey. Although the river itself doesn’t pass through central Woking, parts of it can be found in nearby areas like Old Woking and Pyrford.
