FAQs
Absolutely, Farnham is well worth a visit. This historic market town in Surrey has a unique mix of countryside beauty and cultural heritage. It’s home to Farnham Castle, one of the few remaining motte-and-bailey castles in the country and has a thriving arts scene thanks to places like Farnham Maltings. The town centre is full of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, and there are beautiful walks nearby, particularly in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Farnham is famous for its rich history, Georgian architecture and connection with the arts and crafts movement. It’s home to the historic Farnham Castle, which dates back to the 12th century and was once the residence of the Bishops of Winchester. The town is also recognised internationally as England’s first World Craft Town, reflecting its long-standing links to pottery, textiles and other crafts. The nearby University for the Creative Arts also contributes to Farnham’s reputation as a hub for creativity and design. The beautiful surrounding countryside, including Waverley Abbey ruins and the North Downs adds to Farnham’s appeal.
The River Wey runs through Farnham, flowing gently through the town and nearby countryside. It’s part of the larger Wey and Arun Canal network and adds to the town’s tranquil setting. There are plenty of walking routes along the riverbanks where you can spot wildlife or just enjoy a peaceful afternoon by the water. The river has historically played an important role in Farnham’s development, especially during the wool trade and hop-growing eras.
Farnham has been settled since Roman times and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, so it’s over 1,000 years old. The town grew around Farnham Castle, which was built shortly after the Norman Conquest and played a significant role throughout medieval and Tudor history. It was an important stop on the route between London and Winchester, which helped it grow into the market town we see today. Many of the buildings in the town centre still reflect its Georgian and earlier origins.
Farnham is full of interesting things to see and do, especially if you enjoy a mix of history, countryside and family-friendly attractions. Start with Farnham Castle, a 12th-century site perched on the hill overlooking the town. It’s a great place to explore if you’re into medieval history, and the views from the top are brilliant. Just outside the town, you’ll find the Waverley Abbey Ruins – the remains of England’s first Cistercian abbey. It’s a peaceful riverside spot that’s ideal for a scenic walk or a quiet picnic. Families will enjoy Birdworld, one of the UK’s largest bird parks. It's home to hundreds of bird species, a farm area and a mini aquarium. Nature lovers will also want to explore the North Downs, with walking trails that pass through rolling hills, forests and views stretching for miles. You can also try the Farnham Mystery Treasure Trail, a self-guided adventure that takes you through the town’s winding alleyways and past landmarks like Castle Street and the Georgian architecture that Farnham is known for. Back in town, you can browse independent shops, pop into local galleries like the New Ashgate Gallery or unwind in one of the many cafes and pubs. If you're into crafts and creativity, Farnham Maltings is worth checking out – it hosts regular markets, theatre performances and workshops throughout the year.
Yes, Farnham has a lively town centre that blends historic architecture with a good mix of independent shops, boutiques and high-street favourites. Castle Street is one of the town’s most picturesque roads, lined with Georgian buildings. The town centre also includes the Farnham Maltings, a creative hub for theatre, arts and markets, as well as plenty of places to eat. It’s a great place to explore on foot, with side streets and alleyways revealing hidden gems and local favourites.
Yes, Farnham Castle is open to visitors and it’s one of the town’s biggest highlights. You can explore the Keep and Bishop’s Palace grounds and enjoy sweeping views over Farnham and the surrounding countryside from the top. The castle has an interactive exhibition tracing over 900 years of history and often hosts events, exhibitions and weddings. It’s a must-see for history lovers and anyone wanting a better view of the town from above.
Yes, Farnham has its own train station with direct links to London Waterloo, making it convenient for visitors coming from the capital. The station is around a 10-minute walk from the town centre and also connects to other parts of Surrey and Hampshire.
