FAQs
Yes, Newark is well worth a visit – especially if you enjoy a mix of history, riverside views and a relaxed market town feel. It’s a great spot for a weekend break or a day trip. You’ll find a castle, an impressive church and one of the best-preserved market squares in the country. Plus, it’s easy to get around and full of independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs. Whether you’re into antiques, wartime history or just a peaceful riverside stroll, Newark has plenty going on.
Newark is best known for its Civil War history – it played a major role during the English Civil War and is now home to the National Civil War Centre, which tells the story in an interactive, family-friendly way. The town is also famous for Newark Castle, which sits right on the River Trent and dates back to the 12th century. Newark has long been known for its antique shops and regular antique fairs. It’s also got a thriving local market that’s been running for centuries.
Newark is in Nottinghamshire, and there are several towns nearby worth checking out. Lincoln is just over 30 minutes away and makes for a great day out, with its impressive cathedral and old cobbled streets. Grantham and Sleaford are also nearby and you’re not far from the city of Nottingham, either. All of them are easily reached by road or train, making Newark a good base for exploring the surrounding area.
What makes Newark special is its mix of old and new. You’ve got Newark Castle with its riverside setting, historic market square, and Civil War connections, but also a modern town with good shops, eateries and green spaces. It’s small enough to feel relaxed but has enough going on to keep you busy for a couple of days. The River Trent running through town gives it a scenic edge, and with regular markets, events and festivals.
