FAQs
Yes, Newton Abbot is well worth a stop, especially if you’re exploring Devon. It has a traditional market-town feel, plenty of independent shops and cafes and good links to nearby seaside resorts and Dartmoor National Park. It’s also a convenient base for day trips, with trains and buses connecting you to the coast and countryside in minutes.
Newton Abbot isn’t a seaside town itself, but it’s very close to the coast. In less than 15 minutes you can reach popular seaside spots like Teignmouth, Dawlish or Torquay, making it a great base if you want access to the beach.
The town is famous for its historic markets, horse racing at Newton Abbot Racecourse and its strong railway heritage. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was an important hub for the Great Western Railway. Today, people also know it as a busy shopping destination with easy links to the English Riviera and Dartmoor.
Newton Abbot is a medium-sized town, big enough to have a wide range of shops, pubs and facilities, but still small enough to feel walkable and easy to get around.
