It’s also a convenient base for day trips, with trains and buses connecting you to the coast and countryside in minutes.
Newton Abbot isn’t a seaside town itself, but it’s very close to the coast. In less than 15 minutes you can reach popular seaside spots like Teignmouth, Dawlish or Torquay, making it a great base if you want access to the beach.
The town is famous for its historic markets, horse racing at Newton Abbot Racecourse and its strong railway heritage. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was an important hub for the Great Western Railway. Today, people also know it as a busy shopping destination with easy links to the English Riviera and Dartmoor.
Newton Abbot is a medium-sized town, big enough to have a wide range of shops, pubs and facilities, but still small enough to feel walkable and easy to get around.
Yes, Newton Abbot has lots of market days. There’s an indoor market open most of the week, plus outdoor markets run regularly. There’s also a popular farmers’ market on certain days, where you’ll find fresh local produce, baked goods and handmade items.
Newton Abbot train station is very close to the town centre – only about a 10-minute walk. This makes it really handy for visitors arriving by rail, with quick access to shops, cafes and attractions once you step off the train.
You’ll find a good mix of high-street names and independent shops. The town has supermarkets, fashion stores, homeware and well-known chains, alongside smaller boutiques, gift shops and local traders. The market area adds even more variety with stalls selling everything from clothes and plants to fresh food.
There’s a lot to fill your time in and around Newton Abbot. Start with the town’s markets – the indoor pannier market is open most of the week and there’s regular outdoor markets that are great for picking up fresh produce, plants, clothes and local crafts. If you’re visiting in the summer, Newton Abbot Racecourse is a real highlight, with regular horse racing events that bring a lively atmosphere. History fans can stop by St Leonard’s Tower, the remains of a medieval chapel or take a wander through Forde House, a Jacobean manor where Charles I once stayed. Decoy Country Park has a lake for kayaking and paddleboarding, plus walking trails and play areas, while Bakers Park is perfect for a picnic or a gentle stroll. The town also has a cinema, a ten-pin bowling alley and a leisure centre with a swimming pool. Shoppers will enjoy the mix of high-street stores, independent boutiques and quirky finds around Courtenay Street. When you’re ready to head further afield, Dartmoor National Park is just a short drive away, ideal for hiking, cycling or wildlife spotting. And within 15 minutes you can be at seaside favourites like Teignmouth, Dawlish and Torquay for beaches, arcades and fish and chips by the sea.
