Newton Abbot hotel

Stayed for 5 days as we were attending the antiques fair at the race course and the hotel is really convenient for that. We have stayed at many Premier Inns over the years and we know it's not the Ritz but on the whole they have been of a good standard. However, after this trip we are wondering if standards are slipping due to cut backs, greed and understaffing. The reception was like the Marie Celeste for the whole 5 days, hardly ever anyone in there and you can ring the bell to try and get some attention but unlikely anyone will come. We ate in The Social on the 1st night and food was okay but the 2 staff members were rushed off their feet serving. A few days later we went down at 18:00 and asked for a table for 2. There were 6 people in there eating and about 40 or so empty seats but we were told they didn't have a free table until 21:00! We said we'd leave it and as we left not a soul turned up to go in there. Service and standards slipping. The old Beefeater next door being turned into a MacDonalds I believe so expect and early morning wake up call from the building work.

Have been here many many times for short breaks. Large free car park, WI FI ok. Premium rooms nice size, clean, comfy beds nice linens. Good size bathroom with walk in shower. Pleasant, efficient, helpful reception staff. 'Does what is says on the tin' We will be back in the Spring. Wouldn't go anywhere else when in the area as the bus stops outside make it easy to get to many different places without the hassle of driving or searching for parking. Plenty of shopping within ten minutes or much less walking distance. Huge Tesco over the road for essentials.

Great location, decent rooms, absolutely dreadful food We stay at Premier Inn Newton Abbot fairly regularly as we have family in the area, and generally find it a really useful base. It’s well located for what we like doing locally and has easy access to both Exeter and Torquay. We also use Premier Inns quite a lot for short stays and, generally speaking, like the formula. We don’t expect Michelin-starred dining just simple things done reasonably well. A decent room, comfortable bed and food that doesn’t make you question your life choices. The rooms here are absolutely fine and the staff were friendly, so no complaints on that front. Unfortunately, the food is another matter entirely. The hotel used to be linked with the Beefeater across the road, which I believe has now closed. A real shame, because whatever was happening there previously was clearly preferable to what is being served now. Premier Inn appears to have taken the catering in-house and, quite honestly, it’s dreadful. On our first night I ordered a steak which arrived looking distinctly grey, accompanied by a mushroom that was barely cooked and a tomato that was still essentially raw. We also had stale nachos and children’s meals that were tepid. It was one of those meals where you start wondering whether anyone involved in the process had actually cooked before. And then there was breakfast. Every morning seemed to be an exercise in seeing what had run out. Despite there being relatively few people in the breakfast room, there was consistently not enough cooked food being put out. Items would disappear and then sit empty for ages. Juice dispensers were half-filled and then ran out, fruit was in short supply, pastries were in short supply, basically everything seemed to be available in quantities designed to get you through approximately three minutes of breakfast service. Add to this having one front of house server on it doesn’t take a genius to work out they can’t check guests in, seat them, clear, and top up. The overall impression was that they were trying to scrape through with the absolute minimum rather than actually provide a breakfast service. Which is a shame, because the hotel itself is perfectly decent and does exactly what you’d expect from a Premier Inn. But if you’re going to charge for breakfast, it would be nice if breakfast actually existed. Likewise, spending around £90 on dinner for four and receiving food of this standard is difficult to justify. We’ve stayed here plenty of times and would happily stay again for the room and location. We’d just eat absolutely anywhere else. Hotel: perfectly good. Location: very good. Food: avoid at all costs.
