FAQs
Yes, Kilmarnock is well worth a visit, especially if you're interested in Scottish history, green spaces and culture. From exploring Dean Castle Country Park with its historic castle and woodland trails, to discovering the legacy of Robert Burns at the Burns Monument Centre, there's lots to enjoy! Add in a lively arts scene, local shops and nearby countryside, and it makes for a great short stay.
Kilmarnock is known for its strong connection to Robert Burns, with the first edition of his poems printed here in 1786. It’s also famous for Johnnie Walker whisky, which began production in the town. Today, it's known for Dean Castle, the Dick Institute (a major museum and gallery) and as a hub of Ayrshire history and culture. The town also played a big role during the Industrial Revolution and still carries traces of its engineering and textile past.
The River Irvine flows through Kilmarnock, with several smaller burns joining it along the way. It adds some great walking routes and green spaces to the town, especially near Kay Park and Dean Castle Country Park.
Kilmarnock is one of the larger towns in the region and has a busy town centre, a variety of neighbourhoods and good transport links, giving it the feel of a well-developed urban area while still being easy to get around.
