FAQs
As the largest state in Germany, Bavaria takes up the majority of the south and south-east of the country. It borders Austria to the south and east, while its neighbouring states are Baden-Württemberg to the west, Thuringia to the north, Saxony to the north-east and Hesse to the north-west.
The gorgeous countryside is one of the major draws for visitors to Bavaria, with a huge choice of destinations for hiking, cycling, climbing and more. Its major cities include Munich, which is home to the world’s largest and best beer festival Oktoberfest, and Nuremberg, with its walled Old Town and beautiful, historic castles. In general, when you visit Bavaria, you’ll be greeted with traditional medieval towns and palaces, as well as sausage, beer and maybe even some lederhosen!
Munich is the largest city in Bavaria, well known for its annual Oktoberfest celebrations, but other popular destinations within the state include historic Nuremberg, Regensburg (which sits on the river Danube), Bamberg, Passau, and Fürth.
The main language throughout Bavaria is standard German, with some areas speaking Austro-Bavarian or Swabian as their native language. While you may struggle to be understood in English in some of the smaller villages or towns, it’s more than likely that you’ll encounter plenty of English speakers in the major towns like Munich, Nuremberg or Regensburg.
Bavarian cuisine has quite a distinct style, with plenty of hearty meat, dumpling and potato dishes. Some of the classic traditional meals include Bratwurst sausages, Leberkäse meatloaf, Knödel dumplings or Kartoffelsalat potato salad. For pudding, you can try the delicious Bavarian cream - a custard that’s lightened up with whipped cream.
The capital city of the state of Bavaria is Munich - here you can enjoy exploring the Nymphenburg Palace, marvelling at the Marienplatz central square or singing drinking songs at the Oktoberfest annual beer festival.
To explore other German areas with a similar feel to Bavaria, it’s worth checking out the neighbouring states of Baden-Württemberg, home to the stunning Black Forest, and Saxony, which is another great spot for hiking and skiing. Within Bavaria, there’s a variety of towns and cities to explore - visit Munich, Nuremberg, Passau or Regensburg and stay in one of our stylish German Premier Inn hotels.
