FAQs
Chessington is best known for Chessington World of Adventures, a family-friendly theme park that combines rides, a zoo and a SEA LIFE centre all in one. It’s one of the UK’s top attractions for families, offering a mix of roller coasters, animal encounters and themed lands like Wild Asia and the Forbidden Kingdom. Chessington is also known for its unique blend of adventure and wildlife experiences, making it a fun day out for all ages.
Chessington World of Adventures officially opened as a theme park in 1987, so it's been entertaining visitors for over 35 years! Before that, the site was home to Chessington Zoo, which had already been a popular local attraction for decades. The park has grown a lot since then, adding rides and themed areas.
The town of Chessington has been around for a long time—its history dates back many centuries, with mentions in records as far back as the Domesday Book in 1086. Over the years, it’s evolved from a rural village into a quiet suburban town in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, with the theme park giving it a boost in recognition.
Chessington is in Southwest London, and it's surrounded by towns like Kingston upon Thames, Epsom, Surbiton, Tolworth and Leatherhead. It’s also within easy reach of places like Esher and New Malden, and it’s not far from the edge of Surrey, making it well placed for those coming from both London and the surrounding counties.
The main attraction is definitely Chessington World of Adventures, where you can enjoy rides, animal exhibits, live shows and indoor attractions. But beyond the theme park, the local area also has nice walking spots like Chessington Countryside Walks, quiet residential parks and local pubs and cafes. It’s a peaceful place overall, but the theme park brings the energy and excitement.
A full day is ideal to get the most out of your visit. With so many rides, animal experiences and shows to enjoy, it’s best to arrive when the park opens and stay until close if you can. Families with younger kids may also want to take it at a slower pace, so spending the whole day helps you see and do more without rushing.
Yes, it does! Chessington Zoo is very much still part of the experience and is included with your theme park ticket. It features a wide range of animals including lions, gorillas, sea lions and penguins. There’s also a children’s farm, walk-through enclosures and the SEA LIFE centre with marine animals. It’s a big part of what makes Chessington special.
There’s plenty to do near Chessington if you’re looking to explore the area a bit more. Nearby Kingston upon Thames is great for shopping, riverside walks and dining, with a mix of high street stores and independent boutiques. Epsom is close by too, known for its racecourse and green spaces like Epsom Downs. If you enjoy nature, Horton Country Park and the Surrey Hills are not far and offer great walking and cycling routes. For something cultural, head to Hampton Court Palace, just a short drive away, or check out the Rose Theatre in Kingston for live performances.
