Chelmsford is known for its rich history, being one of the oldest recorded cities in the UK and for its role as a vibrant shopping. It’s also famous for being the home of the world’s first recorded electric telegraph, developed by Sir Charles Wheatstone and Sir William Fothergill Cooke.
One of the nicest parts of Chelmsford is Hylands House and Estate, a beautiful parkland with woodlands, gardens and mansion. The Bond Street area is also popular, offering shopping, dining and entertainment, as well as riverside walks that add to the town's charm.
Chelmsford is famous for its historic significance, particularly as the birthplace of the world’s first electric telegraph. The city is also known for its scenic parks, such as Hylands Park.
Chelmsford is a historic city with roots dating back to Roman times. It became a market town in the 13th century and gained city status in 2012.
Chelmsford doesn’t have a traditional castle, but it does have historical landmarks, including Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation and nearby Chelmer Valley, where some of its older sites and ruins can be explored.
You can explore a range of activities such as visiting Hylands House, walking around Bond Street, enjoying riverside walks exploring the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation trail and shopping at High Chelmer Shopping Centre. You can also visit Chelmsford Museum or catch a show at the Civic Theatre.
Chelmsford offers several family-friendly activities, including a visit to Chelmer Park, which has playgrounds and open spaces for picnics, and Hylands House and Estate, perfect for family walks. Chelmer Valley Nature Reserve is a great spot for nature walks whilst Central Park features a cafe, playgrounds and a skate park.
Chelmsford offers a variety of activities such as hiking and cycling along the scenic River Can Path or enjoying the open spaces and woodlands at Chelmer Valley Nature Reserve. Central Park offers spacious areas for picnics, sports and a playground for children. Alternatively, head to Riverside Park for a leisurely stroll along the river or to enjoy the sports facilities.

Check-in - minimising contact at reception and providing hand sanitiser in most public areas for peace of mind.
Bed linen and towels - laundering all our linen and towels at over 60°C to thermally disinfect them, so you can enjoy a great night’s sleep. We’ve also placed spare pillows in a zip-up bag, for extra peace of mind.
Equipping our teams - providing our team members with all the equipment and sanitisers they need, as well as always operating in the safest way possible for our teams and guests.
A generous serving of safety - you can relax knowing that enhanced cleaning measures are in place throughout our restaurants. Tables are cleaned between visits and contactless payment is in place too, so you can dine safely and comfortably with us every time.
Clean on request - if you'd like your room cleaned during your stay with us, just let us know at reception and use the handy door hanger on the back of your door by 12pm each day.
Most Premier Inns have specially-adapted rooms allowing easier access for customers with disabilities. If there is no specially-adapted room available at the hotel of your choice, we will be happy to offer you alternative accommodation at a nearby Premier Inn. If you have difficulty walking, but do not need a specially-adapted room, please feel free to request a room near reception on the ground floor for easy access.
